Are Criminal Minds’ Matthew and A.J friends in real life?

Matthew and A.J from Criminal Minds have been friends off-screen for over 15 years, this is arguably one of the reasons why fans love the amazing on-screen friendship.

Criminal Minds is an American police procedural crime drama series produced by Jeff Davis. The show premiered on CBS on 22 September 2005 and concluded on 19 February 2020. It features a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), using behavioral analysis and profiling to investigate crimes and find perpetrators.

Dr. Spencer Reid is a fictional character on the crime drama, portrayed by Matthew Gray Gubler. Reid is seen as a genius with an IQ of 187. He is the youngest member of the BAU, has three BA degrees, three PhDs (in Chemistry, Engineering and Mathematics), and specializes in statistics and geographic profiling. Reid works alongside Jennifer “JJ” Jarreau, played by A.J Cook. JJ is the team’s liaison with the media and police agencies. She works mostly out of the confines of the police stations and sometimes accompanies the team on raids. Although Unit Chief, Aaron Hotchner suggested she take the necessary classes in behavioral analysis, she declined the offer.

The characters quickly became close and fans watched them grow up together over the years. JJ even announced Reid as her son’s godfather in one of the episodes. Their friendship is not only on-screen, but the actors are said to be best friends in real life too.

Cook and Gubler have been working together on Criminal Minds for over 15 years. Although Cook took breaks from the show to give birth to her two sons, they never lost their friendly connection. While they were filming Criminal Minds, they made regular appearances on each other’s social media platforms, as they publicly shared their friendship.

After Criminal Minds, the actors had several different projects but seemed to still stay friends through everything.
