Johannesburg has a number of farmer’s markets which offer fresh produce at a fraction of the price, which allow you to buy directly from the supplier. These include the Melville Farmer’s Market, Sylvia’s Outdoor Market, Market on Main, Rosebank’s Sunday Market and a number of others. On average, the price of lettuce in a supermarket can cost up to R60 for two KGs, whereas at a Farmer’s Market it is reduced to R30 or R40.

Visiting a local farmer’s market also creates for a recreational weekend activity, allowing you to spend time outdoors whilst completing the mundane task of grocery shopping. You are also able to buy organic skincare products and handmade clothing items, which are also priced much lower than the average retail store. Visiting your local farmer’s market is a great way to save money each month and enjoy an outdoor activity for a very reasonable price.
