Deadpool 2: Why did Vanessa die?

Vanessa’s death in the beginning of Deadpool 2 was a narrative device, for Deadpool’s anger to motivate him to carry out his mission in the sequel.

Deadpool 2 began with a surprising plot twist, which surprised the viewers. This is as in the first 10 minutes of the film, protagonist, Wade Wilson’s love interest and fiancée, Vanessa Carlysle dies. The character was played by leading lady, Morena Baccarin. Her death came as a surprise, considering the significant role she played in the first film.

Her death takes place as she and Wilson decide to start working towards having a family of their own. Her death was at the hands of a mobster, who managed to escape Wilson as Deadpool’s wrath. Following the mobster’s escape, they tracked Deadpool’s personal details down and attacked him and Vanessa, which resulted in her death. Vanessa’s death is the push that Deadpool needed in order to save the young mutant, Russell. The plot of the sequel of the film franchise is based on the survival of the young mutant.

When asked about the surprising decision to kill off his love interest, lead and co-writer of the film, Ryan Reynolds explained that the decision was taken as a narrative device. First, Reynolds explained that the “character’s so outrageous and so obnoxious and so crazy that if he had everything, everything was in a good place in his life, you can’t really turn up the fun.” He added, “The more pain Deadpool’s in, the funnier Deadpool can be, or the more ridiculous Deadpool can be, or outlandish.”

This was the reason for Vanessa’s death, as Reynolds further explained , “So we really only had the one thing to take, and that was Vanessa. It was something we agonised over forever.”  The death provided him with the motivation which was the plot twist of the film. Therefore, without her death taking place, there would have been no motivation for Deadpool to forge ahead and save Russell.
