Rooster from The Ranch will not return to the series, as Netflix reportedly fired Danny Masterson after rape allegations came to light.
The Ranch is an American television comedy and drama series. It stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson as brothers, Colt and Rooster Bennett. They help run the Colorado cattle ranch owned by their father, Beau. The series debuted in 2016 on Netflix and ran for four seasons in eight parts. The second part of the last season debuted on 24 January 2020.
In March 2017, four women levelled sexual assault allegations against Danny Masterson, prompting a Los Angeles Police Department investigation. Masterson denied the allegations. On 5 December 2017, Netflix fired Masterson from the comedy series, The Ranch, in response to the accusations. Netflix released a statement at the time, stating, “Yesterday was his last day on the show, and production will resume in early 2018 without him.” Masterson admitted that he was very disappointed in Netflix’s decision to write off Rooster.
A fifth woman who claimed to have dated Masterson also levelled rape accusations in December 2017. He was then dropped as a client by United Talent Agency. On 17 June 2020, Masterson was charged with raping a 23-year-old woman in 2001, a 23-year-old woman in 2003, and a 28-year-old woman in the same year. The three counts came after a three-year investigation that started in 2017. If Masterson is found guilty, he faces up to 45 years in prison.
On 21 January 2021, Masterson pleaded not guilty. A four-day preliminary hearing began on 18 May 2021. On 21 May 2021, the Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, Charlaine F. Olmedo, ordered that Masterson be bound over trial on three counts of rape by fear or force, and that he should surrender his passport at the next arraignment, which was set for 7 June 2021. He pleaded not guilty for the second time and is currently out on $3.3 million bail.
Judge Eleanor Hunter set 9 August 2021 as the next time that prosecutors and defense lawyers will convene to handle some outstanding matters and motions. The case will then move to trial within 90 days of that forthcoming motion hearing – which will be around Monday, 8 November 2021.
