Jane does not lose her baby in Jane the Virgin, but Mateo is kidnapped shortly after she gives birth to him at the beginning of the season two premiere.
The 2010s were defined by the popularity of telenovelas, and one stood out in this regard, as the sitcom drama series Jane the Virgin merged the tropes which defined the popular genre with elements of comedy.
The series aired from 2014 before it concluded in 2019 after five seasons. The show is premised on Jane Villanueva, a devout Catholic who was a virgin when she found out that she had been artificially inseminated.
The first season of the show was based on the big question of whether Jane would give birth to the baby, which she did by the end of the season. Her son’s name was Mateo Solano Villanueva.
How many children did Jane have?
In the five seasons of Jane the Virgin, Jane Villanueva only ever had one child. However, her son, Mateo, did have half-siblings through his father, Rafael, who had two girls with Petra, his ex-wife.
Petra went on to have twins, Ellie and Anna Solano. Despite her initial hesitation when she first found out, Jane took on an active role in the children’s lives after she had come to terms with it.
This included her taking Petra to a Mommy-class when she struggled to connect with the twins, and after the time jump, she had weekly lunch dates with their children and Ellie and Anna referred to Jane as “Aunt Jane”.
By the end of the series, Jane was officially their stepmother.
Does Jane lose her baby in Jane the Virgin?
The first season of Jane the Virgin was premised on whether Jane Villanueva would have the baby that she was accidentally artificially inseminated with or not.
While the season played out, it became clear that the series was about the love triangle between Jane, her long-term boyfriend, Michael Cordero, and the father of her child, Rafael Solano. This storyline carried the rest of the seasons of the series.
In the first season, the baby was the elephant in the room. It took until the season one finale to find out whether Jane would have and keep the baby. In an episode titled “Chapter Twenty-Two”, we finally got the answer.
Jane not only had the baby, but she also decided to keep her son, Mateo, who became her biggest motivation. The scene in which she gives birth is still considered one of the most touching moments from the entire series.
This is as we got to see Jane giving birth while she is supported by her matriarchal family, including her mother Xiomara and Alba.
Alba provided the most touching moments in the scene as she guided and comforted her granddaughter during her difficult labour.
Who kidnapped Jane’s baby in Jane the Virgin?
Season two of Jane the Virgin started with high-stakes. This is as Mateo, who Jane had just given birth to, was confirmed to have been abducted.
It was later revealed that the culprit was Sin Rostro, a drug lord operating in Miami. The character and the kidnapping were used as a plot device to get Jane’s two love interests in the story to work together to bring up Mateo safely.
This task, when it was done successfully, ended with Rafael asking Michael to be Mateo’s godfather, despite the fact that both characters were vying for Jane’s affections throughout the remaining seasons of the series.
How old is Jane’s baby?
Jane’s baby was born at the end of season one. Between season two and three, before the three year jump in the story, Mateo was played by a number of different child actors.
But after the time jump, Elias Janssen became the permanent Mateo that fans learnt to grow with and love as much as his on-screen mother.
Janssen played Mateo until the age of five years old, which is believed to be the age he was during season five and the final season of the sitcom series.
What is Elias Janssen doing now?
Elias Janssen is the child actor behind the five-year-old Mateo Solano Villanueva character in Jane the Virgin.
He joined the cast in 2016 during the show’s third season run, and Janssen played the role until season five, which was the last season of the sitcom in 2019.
While the child actor has not done any acting since, during the time he worked on Jane the Virgin, he also featured on Lethal Weapon as Hunter Caldera and on Office Problems as Elias in 2016, and in 2017, he featured on The Mindy Project as Leo.
