Firefly Lane’s season one finale leaves viewers guessing why Kate stopped talking to Tully

Firefly Lane is one of the newest hit series on Netflix, whose first season ended on a cliffhanger as both lead characters, Kate and Tully, were not speaking to one another.

Firefly Lane premiered worldwide on Netflix on Thursday, 3 February 2021, and has since become one of the streaming platform’s most highly rated shows. The series is based on the book Firefly Lane, by Kristin Hannah, and stars well-known actresses, Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke.

The story centres around Tully and Kate, who meet as young girls on Firefly Lane and become inseparable throughout 30 years of ups and downs. Katherine takes on the role of Tully Hart, a famous host of a daytime talk show known as The Girlfriend Hour, with the younger version being played by Ali Skovbye. Sarah plays Kate Mularkey, Tully’s best friend since they were 14 years old and a housewife who is trying to return to the workplace, all while going through a divorce from her husband. The younger version of Kate is played by Roan Curtis.

Season one delves into the background of each character and the moments that led them to becoming best friends. Whilst overcoming many challenges, such as Kate’s ex-husband sleeping with Tully before they were married and Tully’s interference in Kate’s parenting, they manage to remain close friends and often refer to one another as sisters.

In the season finale, Firefly Lane skips to the year 2005, where the friends attend Kate’s father’s funeral. At this point, audience members learn that Kate and Tully stopped talking at some point between 2003 and 2005, resulting in Kate asking Tully to leave and claiming that she never wants to see her again.

This moment leaves viewers guessing and speculating about what will happen in season two. Kristin Hannah’s novel also does not reveal much about what happened between the two, allowing series creator, Maggie Friedman, to have free reign on the upcoming storyline.
