Gantz: Why it needs a remake

Content: Gantz: Why it needs a remake?

Gantz is one of the popular anime mangas from the 2000s that allegedly needs a remake, but the chances of that are unlikely according to creator, Hiroya Oku.

Anime manga series are one of the film and television genres that have grown in global popularity in the past two decades.

From initial anime manga series like Pokémon, Bleach, and the Naruto universe, anime manga series have grown exponentially.

One of the other popular anime manga series to have garnered popularity since it premiered in 2004 is Gantz.

This anime manga series is believed, by some of its fans, to be in need of a remake. But that seems unlikely if the words of creator Hiroya Oku are anything to go by.

Is Gantz finished?

To answer whether Gantz is finished or not, it is important to distinguish between the manga and the anime. This is as the anime manga series had one season which had 26 episodes based on the manga and its timeline.

However, the actual manga, which was first published in 2000, ran until 2013, and it had three different story arcs.

Moreover, there are Gantz films, including Gantz, Another Gantz and Gantz: Perfect Answer which were released in 2010, and the last two in 2011, respectively. But due to the liberties that the films took, they did not tell the manga story completely.

Gantz: Why it needs a remake

Gantz is a manga based on two high school students after they have seemingly died, but instead of waking up in the afterlife, they wake up in the middle of an empty apartment where they are told that their lives as they know them are over and that they now have to join in hunting for alien beings hiding out on Earth.

They are given superhuman abilities and technologically advanced equipment to achieve their missions.

Although during its premiere it garnered widespread critical acclaim and currently is rated a 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb, at the time of its release, CGI in film and television was not as advanced as it is now.

Therefore, based on its sci-fi premise, fans of the show who have continued to rewatch the anime manga series believe that one of the reasons it needs a remake is in order to see how the series would look if it is created with the advanced CGI technology available today.

Another reason for the call for the series to be remade is based on the fact that fans of the series believe that it was rushed.

Therefore, there are details that the series missed and did not fully delve into as much as the manga actually did. This means that in order to fully understand the premise and story arc of the manga, you need to read the manga.

Who produced Gantz the anime manga series?

The serialised version of Gantz was an anime manga that was first published as a weekly Japanese language magazine called Weekly Young Jump from July 2000 to August 2013.

The anime manga series was created by the Japanese studio, Gonzo, which is also responsible for other anime manga series like Last Exile. Moreover, the studio is also behind the film adaptations of the manga series.

But it seems that the breakdown in the relationship between Hiroya Oku and another studio is responsible for the remake or the much-anticipated live-action not being created.

Hiroya Oku on Gantz remake

In 2021, there was much furore over the news that Gantz was set to create a remake of the live-action films released. This is as Hiroya Oku had signed the rights of the manga to an American studio that would be behind the live-action film remake.

But in an interview with Crunchyroll, he revealed that it was the contract that he signed with the American studio that has halted any adaptations of his manga, stating, “That’s the Hollywood type of contract; they own all the adaptations including anime and live-action, except for manga.”

Hope for Gantz remake projected for 2024

While it seems bleak for fans of the Gantz universe right now in terms of remakes of the anime manga series and live-action films because of the contract that Hiroya Oku allegedly signed with the unidentified American studio company in 2020, there is a suggestion of a silver lining, as it is stipulated that the terms of the contract that Oku signed is a four-year exclusivity right.

Therefore, there may be hope for a remake after the four-year clause is over in 2024.
