Three out of the five houses on the eighteenth season of The Block sold at the final auction, and the auction set a few new records.
The Block is a reality television show where teams compete by renovating houses to auction them off at the end.
The most recent eighteenth season of the show has had many ups and downs, ending with only three out of the five houses being sold at the final auction in the finale and at very different price points.
What is The Block about?
The Block is an Australian reality television program that follows several teams every season as they renovate, upgrade, and style houses to sell them at the highest possible price in the auction at the end of the season.
The first season of the show premiered on Nine Network in 2003, quickly followed by the premiere of the second season in 2004.
The show is currently in its eighteenth season, which aired from 7 August 2022 to 6 November 2022. This season also reached well over a million viewers for its final episode.
Have any of The Block houses sold?
The contestants on The Block are known for pulling off massive feats in order to get their houses in immaculate shape for the final auction.
In this season specifically, the teams had their hands full, and budgets stretched with country homes that have five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and four parking spots each.
At the end of the gruelling 12 weeks of renovations after each team had their fair share of ups and downs, the final auction began.
Tom and Sarah-Jane won the advantage of choosing the order in which the houses would be auctioned off.
And so the nail-biting auction began with Omar and Oz going first, then Tom and Sarah-Jane, then Rachel and Ryan, followed by Ankur and Sharon, and Dylan and Jenny went last.
In a shocking twist that no-one watching the show or participating in it saw coming, only three out of the five houses up for auction ended up surpassing the reserve of $4 080 000 and ended up being sold.
These houses belonged to the winners of the season, Omar and Oz (who renovated House 5), Rachel and Ryan (who renovated House 2), and Tom and Sarah-Jane (who renovated House 1).
Although Omar and Oz secured the biggest profit that the show has ever seen, many people have been confused by the wildly disparate prices that all of these homes were sold for.
How much profit did the houses that have sold make at the auction?
Even though the teams that did have their houses sold at the auction were all very excited and relieved, these houses all sold at vastly different price-levels.
The prices that the houses sold for and the subsequent profits that were made on each house include:
| Team | Reserve | Sold price | Profit |
| Omar and Oz (House 5) | $4 080 000 | $5 666 666.66 | $1 586 666.66 |
| Rachel and Ryan (House 2) | $4 080 000 | $4 249 000.85 | $169 000.85 |
| Tom and Sarah-Jane (House 1) | $4 080 000 | $4 100 000.99 | $20 000.99 |
Omar and Oz also took home an additional $100 000 in prize money as the winners of the season.
Which houses did not sell at the auction?
Some of the teams that were not so excited about the results of the auction are the two teams who did not manage to reach the reserve bid.
These teams, whose houses were passed in as a result, were Sharon and Ankur (who renovated House 3), as well as Dylan and Jen (who renovated House 4).
Although these couples have not sold their houses yet, they are still engaged in negotiations to try and get the houses sold. Both teams ended up getting a highest bid of $4 075 000.
Why are people so shocked by this season’s auction result?
Season 18 of The Block has had a lot of drama from the start, with one team leaving the show and being replaced early on.
This drama continued all the way to the end of the season with the final auction, where the winning team earned the biggest profit in the history of the show, but the team in third place earned the lowest profit since the Glasshouse in 2014.
Furthermore, another record was set when two houses did not meet the reserve amount and were passed in instead of being sold at the auction.
Many people have been confused about the discrepancy between the amounts that these houses ended up being sold for since they have such a similar value. However, the show has maintained that the auctions are perfectly fair.
