Shameless will not be returning for season 12, as the series concluded with season 11, despite its open-ended conclusion for most of the main characters.
Shameless was the flagship series of television network, Showtime. The series had an 11-season run, first airing in 2011.
On top of being a critically acclaimed series, the US spin-off of the originally English series was also a ratings winner as it was touted the number one show on the channel.
However, as more of the main cast members were considering leaving the series, the channel confirmed that the then upcoming eleventh season of the series would mark the final season.
Therefore, for fans hoping for a twelfth season due to the open-ended conclusion for most of the main characters at the end of season 11, unfortunately, there will not be one.
What was Shameless (US)?
Showtime’s Shameless first premiered in 2011 on the channel. The series is the American spin-off of the equally popular English version of the series, which was created by Paul Abbott.
Credited for developing the US version is the executive producer and showrunner of Shameless US, John Wells.
The premise was, “A scrappy, feisty, fiercely loyal Chicago family makes no apologies.” In the title roles were William H. Macy as the patriarch of the Gallagher family, Frank. Emmy Rossum played the eldest daughter and mother figure, Fiona.
Therefore, when Rossum left the series in season nine, speculation about the series ending began to surface.
Is there a season 12 of Shameless?
Fans of Shameless and new viewers that have been introduced to the series in the time since the show aired its eleventh season, will be shocked to know that there will not be a season 12.
The series marked its open-ended conclusion with the eleventh season. Season 11 consisted of 12 episodes, which aired between December 2020 and April 2021, with each episode released the day after on Netflix.
While the news might come as a surprise to new fans, for fans that have followed the series from its inception, the news does not come as a surprise, since the announcement of the conclusion was made in January 2020, while the tenth season was still airing.
The announcement that the series was renewed for an eleventh and final season was made by Showtime during the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour.
Showtime on Shameless coming to an end
Reasons for the decision to end Shameless have never been explained publicly. This is surprising, since at the time of the confirmation that season 11 would be the series finale, the series was the number one show on the channel.
Speaking on the series coming to an end, Showtime’s co-president of entertainment, Gary Levine only stated in part:
“John and his people refresh it each year, and it still gets a huge audience for us as well as for that streaming service that runs our reruns.”
Adding, “We just felt it was time, and we also liked the idea of giving John and Co. a chance to end it well, to be able to aim for that landing.”
John Wells on Shameless coming to an end
Similarly, showrunner and executive producer, John Wells, was also tight-lipped about the reason they decided to end the series with the eleventh season.
In his statement on the series coming to an end, Wells was quoted as stating, “I’m unbelievably thankful for all of the years of support from Gary Levine and everyone at Showtime that’s allowed us to make Shameless.”
Going on to add, “It’s been a fantastic experience and all of us in the cast and crew have had a wonderful time following the lives of the Gallagher family and friends. It’s been a pleasure.”
Did Fiona return in Shameless season 11?
Fiona Gallagher was played by Emmy Rossum for the first nine seasons of Shameless. She made the decision to leave the show, as she wanted to grow and find new career milestones.
Therefore, when it was confirmed that Shameless was ending with the eleventh season, many expected that the actress would return to reprise her role during the series finale, however, she did not.
But she did tweet on the day of the series’ final episode, stating, “I’m so proud of this cast and am immensely honored to have been a part of a show as unique and impactful as Shameless. I will miss you this Sunday!”

Shameless proved to be a ratings winner for Showtime, as it was the number one series on the channel, and introduced the channel to a younger demographic of viewers.
Therefore, when in January 2020, it was confirmed that the series was set to end with the then upcoming eleventh season, many were surprised.
