VTuber Kiryu Coco’s graduation was scheduled for 1 July 2021 at 20:00, however, her channel and content will only shut down in October 2021.
On Wednesday, 9 June 2021, Coco uploaded a video where she revealed that she would be graduating from Hololive on 1 July 2021 at 20:00.
Despite being a fictional character, Coco has more than 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube. She is one of the pre-eminent figures of a Japanese cultural creation: the virtual YouTube scene.
A virtual YouTube, also known as VTube, is a channel that follows an animated or a virtual character, instead of a real-life person. The characters are animated beings controlled by a human actor, often through the use of motion capture technology.
They inhabit livestreams on YouTube, Twitch and other popular streaming platforms. Some channels go even further by hosting virtual events, where attendees can take on a virtual form of their own to join in on the action.
In light of the speculations, Coco recently went live to explain the reason behind her exit. She stated, “The one thing that made me think that I could not go on like this, was the fact that I started to compare myself to others. I realized that there is no end to comparing yourself to others. And all that it did was make me more and more miserable.”
Adding, “I realized that I was trapped in a spiral and it was very unlike me. I felt like being Coco did not make me happy anymore. I realized that something needed to change.” Coco, thus made the decision to graduate to make the needed change in her life.
The fans will still have access to Coco’s channel for three months after her graduation. Thereafter, her channel will be completely shut down in October 2021.
Admirers are extremely sad about Coco’s decision. Many of her fans have taken to social media to express that they are having a hard time accepting the fact that they will no longer be able to watch Coco’s videos.
