Yellowstone: Season 5 confirmed and what we know so far

Why did Yellowstone leave Paramount?

Season five of Yellowstone has been confirmed as a two-part release consisting of seven episodes each, with part one reportedly expected for release in the summer of 2022.

Paramount Network has confirmed the renewal of its flagship series Yellowstone.

The renewal of the hit neo-Western comes as no surprise, as it was the most popular series on cable television for 2021, with the series continuing to grow in terms of viewership numbers from season to season.

Most of the details of the fifth season have been kept under wraps, as it has been confirmed that show creator Taylor Sheridan is currently still working on the complete script.

However, what has been confirmed is that the fifth season will be released in two-parts, with the first instalment projected for this summer.

What is Yellowstone?

In 2018, Yellowstone was released as part of the relaunch of Paramount Network, which was previously known as Spike.

The John Linson and Taylor Sheridan created series proved to be a slow burn, as can be seen with its most recent seasons, which have only seen the series grow in terms of viewership numbers, resulting in the expansion of its universe through the release of 1883 and the upcoming series 6666.

The premise of Yellowstone is, “A ranching family in Montana faces off against others encroaching on their land,” according to IMDb.

The series is fronted by acclaimed actor and executive producer Kevin Costner, who plays the head of the Dutton family, John.

Yellowstone: Season 5 confirmed and what we know so far

Season five of Yellowstone was confirmed in February 2022, following the conclusion of the fourth 10-episode season in January 2022.

The season finale affirmed that the series is only growing in terms of its viewership, as the episode is touted as the most-watched cable telecast since The Walking Dead’s season eight premiere in October 2017.

Moreover, the ensemble cast was celebrated during the recent SAG Awards for the grounds the show has broken.

Seemingly, the growing popularity has affirmed the series longevity as CEO of the 101 Studios behind Yellowstone, David Glasser explained:

“I think the show is still maturing, and there’s still a lot of story to tell. I know with Taylor, he’s got a lot to say and a lot to write. He’s deep into Season 5 of Yellowstone now. He’s got some incredible ideas that he shared that I think audiences are going to be really excited about.”

Yellowstone confirms two-part season 5 release

Except for the first season’s nine-episode run, Yellowstone has had 10 episodes per season.

Following confirmation of the series renewal for a fifth season, it was also confirmed that the new season will be released in two parts. Each part will consist of seven episodes each, rounding up the total of season five to 14 episodes.

Most recently, Ozark also divided its season four in the same manner in order to allow the writers to aptly conclude the series with the upcoming season four, part two series finale.

However, this does not mean the end of Yellowstone, as season six has not been confirmed nor denied.

When will Yellowstone season 5 be released?

While season five of the Kevin Costner-fronted series Yellowstone was confirmed in mid-February 2022, news on when to expect the new season have been tentative.

Considering that there was a delay in the release of the latest seasons due to the pandemic and the restrictions it has placed on the entertainment industry, what has been confirmed is that fans will not need to wait a year for the first part of season five.

It is reported that production will commence with the cast in May 2022, and the first part of season five can be expected for summer 2022. However, a definite release date has yet to be determined and shared by Paramount Network.

Will there be new cast members on Yellowstone season 5?

While there has been no announcement of new cast members joining the series in the upcoming new season, there has been confirmation that two of Yellowstone’s initially recurring guest appearances have been promoted to series regulars.

The first is acclaimed and three-time Emmy award winning actress Jen Landon, as the incomprehensible Teeter.

The second is British actress Kathryn Kelly, who plays the character of Emily, who is Jimmy’s fiancé and appeared in four episodes of season four. Her surprising promotion suggests that she and Jimmy might just tie the knot in the new season.

Final thoughts

Yellowstone is the neo-Western series which was released to coincide with the rebranding and launch of Paramount Network in 2018.

In the years since its premiere, it has gone on to earn the title as the network’s flagship show, as it has not dominated in numbers on the network, but on telecast television as a whole.

In January 2022, season four concluded on television and the series was subsequently confirmed for the fifth season.

The upcoming season is set to be released in two parts, each consisting of seven episodes, and the first part is projected for a 2022 summer premiere.
