The many times the Friends reboot was rescheduled

The cast, crew and fans of Friends have been eagerly awaiting the reboot for over 16 years, and due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were made to wait even longer.

HBO’s Friends reunion special is expected to air in March 2021, however, due to the constant changes brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, it is still unclear when it will premiere. After 16 years off air, in February 2020, the cast announced that they would all be reuniting for a reboot, which was initially scheduled to air in May 2020. All the actors took to their Instagram pages to share an image of them, captioned, “It’s happening.”

In June 2020, executive producer and creator, Marta Kauffman, told The Wrap that they were planning on rescheduling the shoot to August 2020, however, it was all dependent on the state of the pandemic. Due to the fact that the reboot was expected to have a live audience, for the sake of authenticity, filming was postponed indefinitely yet again. This was done for the safety of the cast, crew and viewers.

In November 2020, Mathew Perry took to Twitter to announce that the reunion had been scheduled for March 2021, adding that he was looking forward to a busy year. He stated, “Friends reunion being rescheduled for the beginning of March. Looks like we have a busy year coming up. And that’s the way I like it!” Matthew’s update was the last from any of the cast and crew members, leaving fans to believe that HBO is currently on schedule with the production of the reboot.

According to a January 2021 article from US Magazine, the special is still set to be filmed on Stage 24 of the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank, the same stage where the sitcom was filmed at for 10 years. It is still unclear if the reboot will be scripted or candid, as the producers appear to be leaving that as a surprise for viewers.
