The Office: A list of Dunder Mifflin managers

Stever Carell Michael Scott The Office

Throughout its nine-year run, The Office had a total of nine Dunder Mifflin managers, as four were main characters, while the other five were guest appearances.

The Office is regarded as one of the best sitcoms in television history. Premiering just a year after Friends concluded, the sitcom is continually compared to its predecessor. This is despite the premise of each being different.

The Steve Carell fronted series focussed on mundane activities of office life in the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. Stever Carell played the manager, Michael Scott.

However, throughout the years, there have been a total of nine managers to occupy the seat, all of whom are shared below.

What was The Office?

The Office was originally an English sitcom created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, before it was developed into a US spin-off by Greg Daniels.

The US version premiered in 2005 and the premise of the sitcom was, “A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and tedium.”

The Office was fronted by Steve Carell as Michael Scott, until Carell decided to leave the sitcom during season seven to spend more time with his family.

Though it did not run for long after that, the NBC hit sitcom had two more seasons before it ended in 2013.

The Office: A list of Dunder Mifflin managers

Steve Carell will always be the beloved and most recognised manager of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. As Michael Scott, the actor played the manager and protagonist of the sitcom for seven years.

However, even during this time, he would sometimes be replaced by a sitting manager, only to reprise his position in the office.

Despite his erratic and sometimes offensive behaviour towards his staff, he still remains the best and most memorable Dunder Mifflin manager.

Besides Michael Scott, there have been eight other characters who have filled the position. Meaning that a total of nine managers have been featured on the sitcom.

Below we share a list of all the characters that have played the role of Dunder Mifflin manager and which season they occupied the seat. Moreover, we share the two other main characters that occupied the seat and what their time as manager was like.

Dwight Schrute as a manager

Dwight Schrute arguably had one of the most interesting character developments during the nine seasons of the sitcom.

Throughout the show, he would receive multiple opportunities to hold the position of manager, with each time he did self-sabotaging himself.

Until season nine, where he seemingly learnt from his mistakes and was better at handling the responsibilities of being a manager.

This is as fans, like his co-workers, learnt to better handle his aggressive personality and his erratic and sometimes just bizarre ideas.

He was also behind the dismissal of main character, Kevin Malone during season nine of the sitcom.

Jim Halpert as manager

Jim Halpert is considered the most relatable character on the sitcom, as he plays the “ordinary guy.” His strong point was always sales.

However, when he became manager, he was able to use his sociable skills in order to garner the support of the staffers to support him and his ideas.

However, what Jim lacked was the ability to make decisive choices when it was crunch time. Realising his own shortfalls and inability to hold the position, Jim opted to vacate the position and return to his strong point, sales.

Final thoughts

The Office’s Kevin Malone deserves an honourable mention as one of the managers of Dunder Mifflin.

This is as the character held the position for an hour, after Andy allowed him to occupy the seat and swirl around on the chair, while he waited for the hour to end outside the manager’s office.

Moreover, the sitcom did not take the inclusion of guest cameo appearances lightly in terms of the actors that played managers.

The list includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Idris Elba, Will Ferrell, James Spader and Creed Bratton, who played his namesake on the sitcom.
