The Rings of Power: Why did Celebrimbor make the rings?

The Rings of Power: Why did Celebrimbor make the rings?

In The Rings of Power Celebrimbor makes the three Elven rings not as weapons to wage a war, but as a way to stop Sauron’s corruption from spreading with the One Ring.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had great expectations to live up to, but it has managed to adapt to the longer format of a series successfully and impress many fans.

The first season of The Rings of Power focuses on the creation of the three Elven rings by Celebrimbor in an attempt to circumvent Sauron’s control over the other rings.

Is The Rings of Power worth the watch?

There is no doubt that fans of the original The Lord of the Rings film franchise by Peter Jackson and fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work in general have extremely high expectations of any new adaptations of the film.

Which is why it did not come as a surprise that there were some serious doubts about whether the new Amazon The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series could live up to these expectations.

The 25 million users who tuned in globally to watch the first two episodes of The Rings of Power in the first 24 hours of their release were not disappointed to find the same beautiful score and cinematography that the original film franchise had.

To add to this, the longer format makes it easier for the show’s creators to delve deeper into the history and lore and to focus on the exposition of the characters and world-building at first.

The Rings of Power: Why did Celebrimbor make the rings?

Another part of what has made The Rings of Power series so successful, is the fact that this series endeavours to tell a story that Tolkien fans will be very familiar with and that casual viewers of the franchise will have some idea about.

The Rings of Power series focuses on the Second Age of Middle-earth and how Sauron’s power-hungry actions ultimately lead to his demise.

As the name promises, The Rings of Power answers many of the questions that fans may have wondered about, like how and why the rings were created.

As for the how, Sauron gets his way by disguising himself and manipulating the Elven blacksmith, Celebrimbor, into creating the rings.

However, when Celebrimbor discovered Sauron’s plan and realised that the One Ring would give him control over all the other rings, he forged three new rings Narya, Nenya, and Vilya, which are free of Sauron’s influence.

Celebrimbor does this and sends these rings to the Elven leaders so that they could have a fighting chance against Sauron and his armies.

Although there are some variations between the lore from The Fellowship of the Ring, The Silmarillion, and The Rings of power series, it is clear that these three rings are not made to wage war or to be used as weapons, but rather to try and preserve balance and to keep the world from becoming corrupted and decaying.

What are the rings made of?

Since there is so much going on in The Rings of Power series, you can be forgiven for missing some of the finer details surrounding the Narya, Nenya, and Vilya rings.

From what we know about the rings from The Silmarillion and from what has been shown in The Rings of Power, Celebrimbor makes the rings of the following materials:

Name Stone Metal Element
Narya Ruby Unknown (maybe some silver and mithril) Fire
Nenya Adamant Mithril Water
Vilya Sapphire Gold (maybe a mithril alloy) Air

What are the main differences between the rings in The Silmarillion and in The Rings of Power?

The main difference between the original The Lord of the Rings films and The Silmarillion and The Rings of Power series is that the original series primarily focused on the One Ring and its powers and corruption.

However, in The Rings of Power, more focus is placed on the three Elven rings. However, the series differs from The Silmarillion in quite a few ways.

For instance, in The Silmarillion, Gil-galad and Elrond definitely distrusted Annatar (Sauron’s disguise) immediately and refused him entry initially, but in the series, Celebrimbor trusts him almost immediately.

What can you expect for the rings in season 2 of The Rings of Power?

Although we see the forging of all three of the Elven rings near the end of the first season of The Rings of Power, the series’ creators have condensed and changed much of the original story arc of what Tolkien wrote in his literature, for obvious reasons.

That means that if they follow the same basic, condensed version of the Tolkien lore, Sauron will now start gathering his armies and forging the One Ring in the second season.
