At the end of season one of The Witcher, Yennefer sacrificed her powers in order to channel the Chaos to defeat the Nilfgaardian army through using fire magic.
The Witcher is one of the most popular watches on Netflix. The first season of the fantasy, thrilling season premiered in 2019.
However, it would take over two years until the show returned with the second season, which continued to affirm the popularity of the series.
For fans, season two centred around the central question of whether Yennefer would regain her powers.
The powerful sorceress lost her powers during the season one finale, after she made the ultimate sacrifice in order to channel the Chaos during the Battle of Sodden Hill, using fire magic as a method to defeat the army of the Nilfgaardian.
What is The Witcher about?
Before the premier of the series adaptation of The Witcher, the fantasy story was originally a series of short stories and novels by author Andrzej Sapkowski.
After the stories gained global popularity, they were translated into a video game ahead of Netflix picking them up to adapt them into an English-language series.
Lauren Schmidt is credited for the screenplay adaptation, which is premised on, “Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” according to IMDb.
The three central characters in the series are Henry Cavill as Geralt, Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer.
The Witcher: Why did Yennefer lose her magic?
When season two of The Witcher returned, it picked up moments after the Battle of Sodden between Yennefer and her fellow mages and the army of the Nilfgaardians.
During the battle, at the request of Tissaia, Yennefer is asked to abandon her restraint and channel the Chaos in order to defeat the Nilfgaardians.
In order to save her fellow mages, Yennefer complies and unleashes fire magic which engulfs the entire army of the NIlfgaardians.
However, fire magic requires a lot of power and strength to hold and use it, this is why it is widely forbidden. Moreover, in order to use the forbidden magic, you are required to make a sacrifice to Chaos, in order to channel the power.
Therefore, when Yennefer channelled Chaos in order to use her fire magic, she sacrificed her abilities, resulting in her losing her powers for a large part of season two.
Does Yennefer get back her powers?
Yennefer does eventually get back her powers. However, that takes place at the end of season two. In the season finale episode titled Family, Yennfer along with Ciri have a dangerous encounter with the Deathless Mother.
The mysterious witch possesses Ciri and thereafter Yennfer, but when Ciri is freed she transports herself, Yennefer and Geralt to a world where Yennfer is left with Voleth Meir and we get to see a glimpse of the Wild Hunt.
Upon the trio’s return to the world and beginning reparations following the destruction of the Deathless Mother, Yennefer discovers her powers are back.
How is Yennefer’s blindness a surprise for fans?
The Witcher as a Netflix series has taken some liberties in the character developments in terms of how the short stories and novels were written. In season two, Yennefer’s story arc was arguably the most surprising.
In the books, Yennefer does not lose her powers. Instead, she is temporarily blinded after channelling the Chaos in order to use fire magic to engulf the Nilfgaardians.
However, the loss of her powers enabled the series to begin forging the relationship between mother and daughter, Ciri and Yennefer, which fans hope will be explored with the release of the third season.

Is there going to be The Witcher season 3?
Considering that season two left more character arcs that the series can explore in a new season, fans are expecting a season three. However, Netflix has not confirmed nor denied the assumption.
Between season one and season two, there was a two-year gap, which is attributed to the pandemic and the delays it caused in the film and television industry in general.
Therefore, as Netflix has yet to release a date of release for season three, insiders believe Netflix might stick with the established break and return with season three in December 2023.
Final thoughts
The Witcher is one of the most popular watches on Netflix. The Netflix original series first premiered in 2019, and due to the pandemic, had a two-year delay between season one and two.
Season two is the latest season which was made available in December 2021.
Season two was premised on the central question of title character Yennefer, and whether she will get her powers back.
This is as she lost them during the season one finale, and throughout season two, we watched as she got them back in the season finale, which also marked the possibility of her mending her relationship with Ciri.
