Mystic River’s Jimmy Markum always made his second wife, Annabeth, feel like she comes second to his daughter, Katie, who he had with his first wife, Marita.
Overview
Mystic River is the 2003 critical and commercial hit film by legendary actor and director, Clint Eastwood. Serving as a departure from Eastwood’s signature directing style, the slow burn film with a tragic ending has tropes leaning more towards theatre than filmic tropes.
Moreover, while the focus has largely been on the major storylines, one thing that is often not spoken about in detail is the relationship between Jimmy Markum and his second wife, Annabeth.
Although considered a matriarch of the Markum family, Annabeth’s Achilles heel was her husband and the fact that she always felt like she was competing with Jimmy’s daughter for his affection.
What is Mystic River?
Mystic River is the 2003 crime-drama film directed, co-produced and scored by Clint Eastwood.
The film saw Eastwood showcase his range as the actor-director introduced new filmic techniques, in comparison to the techniques featured in the films he has directed in the past.
This is as the visuals focussed on the expressions and dialogue of the characters rather than the action, providing a more theatrical take than an audio-visual filmic take.
The premise, being based on the novel by Dennis Lehane of the same name, follows “The lives of three men who were childhood friends are shattered when one of them has a family tragedy.”
What did Jimmy do to Annabeth in Mystic River?
In the film, Jimmy Markum was played by acclaimed actor Sean Penn, who received an Oscar for the Best Actor in a Leading Role the following year. Jimmy as an adult was married twice.
First to the woman who was the love of his life, Marita. Together they had a daughter, Katie, shortly before Marita was to die of cancer.
Thereafter, Jimmy would get married to his second wife, Annabeth. Annabeth was considered the matriarch of the Markum family due to her nature and the fact that she married Jimmy, who was respected as he was a criminal who had served time in prison.
However, Annabeth had always felt like she was always second fiddle to Katie. This is as she believed that Jimmy loved Katie more than her, as she was the daughter of Jimmy’s true love, Marita.
Therefore, when Katie dies in the film, Annabeth sees that as an opportunity to pivot Jimmy’s affection to her as she remains supportive of Jimmy even after finding out about his actions.
What did Jimmy do to Dave?
One of the pivotal moments in the film was when Jimmy killed his former childhood friend and tiled character, Dave Boyle.
This is as Jimmy believed that Dave was behind the murder of his daughter, Katie, since Dave’s wife discovered a suspicious cut on his hand, along with some bloodied clothes.
When Dave could not tell a consistent story about where he sustained his injuries, which he incurred on the day of Katie’s murder, Jimmy believed that Dave killed his daughter and in an act of revenge killed Dave, before finding out that he was innocent of Katie’s murder.
Who killed Katie?
Katie Markum was killed by Silent Ray and John O’Shea. Katie, who was 19, wanted to get married to Brendan Harris.
Brenden was from a family that Katie was forbidden to fraternise with as Jimmy had killed their father for ratting him out to cops and his subsequent arrest.
Brendan had a brother, Silent Ray, who when he found out about Brendan and Katie’s plans to elope, devised a plan to scare Katie off by using the gun his father left behind.
However, the plan went south when Katie started screaming and Silent Ray and John chased after her, eventually killing her.
What happens to Sean?
Sean Devine was the last of the three childhood friends whose life is shaped by the family trauma experienced by Dave Boyle in 1975.
In 2000, he was a cop, and an estranged husband with a young daughter. Sean is the only one from the childhood friends who had some version of a happy ending in the film.
This is as he manages to reconcile with his estranged wife by the end of the film and meet his daughter for the first time. Moreover, he had not killed anyone in the film, unlike the other protagonists.
Final thoughts
Upon its release in 2003, Mystic River was immediately identified as Clint Eastwood’s take on a Shakespearean play, but just interpreted into film.
From the focus on the subject rather than the action of the scene, to the monologues and use of silence and word choices, Mystic River is a classic.
An often not talked about enough fact is Annabeth’s storyline in the Markum family, who relishes at the fact that Jimmy lost his daughter, Katie, because she always felt like she was second fiddle to her. This is as Katie is the daughter that Jimmy had with his first and late wife, Marita.
