All Gas No Brakes came to an end after Andrew Callaghan and media partner Doing Things Media were involved in a contractual dispute, giving rise to Channel 5.
Overview
YouTube is a vast and expansive platform with something for everyone, and one of the popular interview-style channels of the 2010s was All Gas No Brakes.
The inception of the channel birthed Channel 5, which was created by Andrew Callaghan, Nic Mosher, and Evan Gilbert-Katz. First being created in 2019, All Gas No Brakes quickly grew due to the unique interview style of Andrew Callaghan.
However, in 2020, the channel stopped posting new videos and it was later confirmed that Andrew Callaghan and the original team were no longer part of the production following contractual disputes with the partner media company Doing Things Media.
What is All Gas No Brakes?
All Gas No Brakes’ YouTube channel was created in August 2019 by co-creators Andrew Callaghan, Nic Mosher, and Evan Gilbert-Katz.
Soon after its inception, the show quickly garnered popularity due to the unique interview style of host Andrew Callaghan and the premise of his interviews.
This is as the early videos on the channel featured Callaghan dressed in a tan suit interviewing people in surprising choices of locations like spring break, AlienCon, or the Flat Earth Conference.
Though the channel already had a strong fan-base, things really started to change during the 2020 national protests, as the channel was one of the first on-the-ground interviewers showing the temperament of the protesters.
What happened to All Gas No Brakes?
All Gas No Brakes as a channel last posted in November 2020. However, it seems that the internal problems began well before the channel’s last post.
This is as in light of the channel’s growth, Andrew Callaghan had signed a contract with Doing Things Media, which he believed would help his company grow.
After signing what he believed was a partnership agreement, Callaghan allegedly received an RV, a salary of $45 000, and money for equipment.
However, it was with the 2020 national protests that it began to be clear what kind of contract Callaghan had signed.
This is as Doing Things Media allegedly attempted to control the type of content that he was making, suggesting he veers away from the political hard news he became popular for.
When he was resistant to the fact, Callaghan’s access to the channel was allegedly blocked, and subsequently had the RV taken from him.
Callaghan later revealed that he unknowingly signed an employment contract believing it was a partnership contract with the media company.
Andrew Callaghan addresses All Gas No Brakes on social media
In March 2021, in light of the lack of posting on the All Gas No Brakes channel in over five months, Andrew Callaghan took to Instagram to address why he decided to leave the page.
He wrote, “When (I) was 20, I wrote a book called All Gas No Brakes about hitchhiking around America as a teenager. At 21, I pitched the idea of a video-based road show to a production company, who loaned me an RV to make videos and explore America with my best friends.”
Adding, “I was ecstatic, who (sic) I signed an employment contract without reading it.” Besides announcing his departure from the channel, he went on to confirm that he was starting his own channel aptly titled Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan.
What is Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan?
Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan is the YouTube channel created by original All Gas No Brakes content creators Andrew Callaghan, Nic Mosher, and Evan Gilbert-Katz in April 2021.
The creation of the channel was a response following the creators initially being edged out from their original channel due to All Gas No Brakes taking a more political direction during the national 2020 protests.
Therefore, Channel 5 has the same content and host. Since the YouTube channel was created almost a year ago, it has garnered a large following, as it sits with 1.63 million subscribers, which is not far from the 1.72 million subscribers of its previous channel.
Andrew Callaghan on end of All Gas No Brakes
Andrew Callaghan has since reflected on the end of All Gas No Brakes and believes that the demise of the channel was a blessing.
This is as he explained, “As soon as that shit happened, I got so much love from so many people telling me ‘hey man, we’re on your team.’ People I didn’t even know were fans, celebrities and shit were reaching out to me. The best thing that ever happened to me was All Gas No Brakes ending.”
Final thoughts
It has always been of utmost importance that individuals who are entering into contractual agreements read and understand a contract before they sign it.
However, sometimes, this is not always the case, and the lesson and the practice thereof can be different. Especially when taking age or naivete into consideration.
All Gas No Brakes and the demise of the channel was one such example, as the co-creators of the show signed an employment contract believing that it was a partnership contract.
When “creative differences” started to surface, the co-creators decided to leave the channel in order to start their own independent YouTube channel.
