Behind Reality TV

What happened to Casa Roma from Kitchen Nightmares?

There are a few of the Kitchen Nightmares episodes that showcase the worst of the worst when it comes all of the show’s usual tropes.

Kitchen Nightmares’ season three features restaurant Casa Roma, which closed in July 2017, after the business was renamed twice.

Kitchen Nightmares may have ended in 2014 after premiering on Fox in 2007, but the cooking reality show is still one of the most popular culinary-focused reality shows ever.

The premise of the series is, “Gordon Ramsay visits struggling restaurants across America and spends one week trying to help them become successful,” according to IMBD.

One of the restaurants that featured in the third season of the series was Casa Roma.

Reasons for the restaurant’s closure were not shared publicly, but by the time it closed, the then local pizzeria had undergone two name changes and a slew of bad reviews, which are suggested as the reasons for its closure.

Why was Kitchen Nightmares cancelled?

Kitchen Nightmares‘ was meant to successfully turn around failing restaurants into at least operational businesses. But by the third season, it appeared that the show was more concerned with the drama than the businesses profiled.

Therefore, by season seven, Gordon Ramsay made the unilateral decision to cancel the show.

Kitchen Nightmares is believed to have a success rate of 22 percent, as only an estimated 16 of the over 77 restaurants featured are still open.

What happened to Casa Roma from Kitchen Nightmares?

In January 2010, Kitchen Nightmares started airing its third season. The seventh episode, which aired in March 2010, featured the Casa Roma restaurant.

As expected, the show introduced the owners of the restaurant, Nylah and Jeremy, mother and son. When Ramsay first arrived at the restaurant in Lancaster, it was immediately clear to him that the problem was head chef and sous chef, Drew and Erick.

Erick, who served as the head chef, was lambasted by the staff as allegedly cooking sub-par food and for his ego.

In light of this, Gordon Ramsay suggested that Nylah fire Erick and promote Drew to head chef. Nylah decided to trust Ramsay and fire Erick. Drew then replaced Erick as head chef.

Moreover, the restaurant toilet facilities were hazardous, as Ramsay revealed marks of bodily fluids on the ceiling and the walls of the bathroom.

By the time of the makeover and the final reveal, the restaurant had fixed all of its major issues. On the day of the initial reopening, Ramsay organised a pizza-eating contest which not only celebrated Casa Roma’s reopening, but also marked the restaurant’s fiftieth birthday.

When Ramsay did his revisit episode, it seemed that the restaurant was doing well, but faced some controversy at the time. This was before the restaurant indefinitely closed down in 2017.

Gordon Ramsay revisits Casa Roma

As part of the revisit specials in subsequent seasons, Gordon Ramsay went back to give viewers an update on Casa Roma.

The revisit revealed that Nylah hired former Sebastian’s chef, Q as the head chef. Furthermore, Nylah bought out her son’s share of the business.

It seemed that all was going well and during the revisit, it seemed that the kitchen and toilets were much cleaner than they were in the initial episode. But the restaurant did face controversy and setbacks thereafter.

Casa Roma controversy

While the revisit episode on Kitchen Nightmares may have suggested that the restaurant was maintaining its success, it was all revealed and alleged to be a fallacy.

Firstly, it was alleged that the restaurant was writing their own reviews on Yelp. Moreover, the quality of the food was questioned as it was, apparently, still sent back to the kitchen for being undercooked.

Moreover, it seems that due to the controversy, the restaurant renamed itself twice before officially closing down in 2017, seven years after its first feature on Kitchen Nightmares.

Casa Roma’s final word on its closure

Before Casa Roma closed indefinitely in 2017, it underwent two name changes including, The AV Roadhouse Restaurant Bar & Grill and CR Roadhouse Restaurant Bar & Grill. But in July 2017, the restaurant officially closed down.

Former owner, Nylah, made the following official statement:

“As of July 1st Casa Roma will be closing their doors for good. It is going to be a very sad month. But things have come about that can’t help but go this way. It’s the next chapter in my life and I love and appreciate all of you who have stood by me and my family and business. Thank you to all of you.”
