What happens to Alberto after his dad leaves in Luca?

Alberto claims to have all the freedom in the world, claiming that his father allows him to do whatever he wants, until Luca learns that Alberto’s father left.

Luca is an American animated, coming-of-age fantasy drama film that is produced by Pixar Animation Studios. It premiered at the Aquarium of Genoa on Sunday, 13 June 2021. It was initially set to be released in theatres, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie was released on the streaming platform, Disney Plus.

Luca is set in the Italian Riviera between the 1950s and 1960s, featuring Luca Paguro, a sea monster boy with the ability to assume human form while on land. He explores the town of Portorosso with his new best friend, Alberto Scorfano.

Alberto has a lot of experience above water, so he was the one who dragged Luca onto land and helped him transform into a human. Alberto lives with his father on an island, but stated that his dad is often away. He also claimed that his father is very relaxed and allows him to do whatever he wants. The truth about his dad is a bit more complex than that, and Alberto tries his best to hide it from Luca.

On the island, the two boys befriend a feisty human, Giulia, who becomes close to Luca. Feeling jealous and abandoned, Alberto flees Portorosso and goes back to his island, where he stays alone. Luca follows Alberto to make sure that he is okay, where he soon discovers the truth about Alberto’s father.

Alberto’s father left him a long time ago. His father told Alberto that he was old enough to look after himself and abandoned him. After his father left, Alberto initially kept track of the days, in the hopes that his father would come back. But after several years of hoping, Alberto stopped and accepted that his father would not return. This explains why Alberto felt abandoned and jealous of Luca’s new friendship with Giulia. He was afraid that Luca would leave him just like his father did.

Fortunately, Alberto gets a happy ending. Giulia’s father, Massimo, offers to let Alberto live with him permanently. This gives Alberto a father figure and someone to take care of him while he fully enjoys his childhood. On the other hand, Luca is seen moving in with Giulia and her mother. He is seen going to school with Giulia to fulfil his dream of learning more about the surface world. Luca and Alberto keep in touch and they write multiple letters to each other.
