Overview

Arcane is the Netflix hit animated series which premiered on the paid subscription video-on-demand platform in November 2021.

The series was much anticipated for gaming aficionados, as it is based on the characters from popular game League of Legends and did not disappoint when the series was finally made available.

Following the conclusion of the first season, which consisted of a total of nine episodes all an average of 40 minutes long, gamers and fans of the series were left wanting more series which are similar.

To make navigating the vast world of animated series easier, we share three top picks similar to Arcane.

What is Arcane?

For gaming enthusiasts, Arcane’s premise is one that they are well familiar with, as it borrows from the popular Riot Games’ League of Legends.

Working with Fortiche, the series is premised on “Set in utopian Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions-and the power that will tear them apart.”

Hailee Steinfeld fronts the animated series as the voice of Vi, and Ella Purnell as the voice of Jinx. While some series can be a let-down due to the anticipation ahead of their release, Arcane did not disappoint when it was finally made available on Netflix.

What to watch after Arcane?

Arcane was released in November 2021 and was an immediate success with viewers. Consisting of nine episodes, each averaged at 40 minutes, the first series is an easy bite-sized binge-watching experience.

The animated series has been praised for many aspects, including the animation style, story and the character development throughout the season.

On IMDb, the series has also earned a rating’s approval of 9.2 out of 10 and continues to be one of the popular watches on the platform.

While the animated series provided below might not tick all the boxes that Arcane ticks, the three shared top picks to binge after watching Arcane embody either an aspect or some aspects that have propelled the series into one of the popular watches on Netflix since its release.

More so, as Netflix has yet to confirm a release date, not that a second season has even been confirmed.

1. Castlevania

Castlevania is another Netflix original animated series which first premiered on the platform in 2017.

Rated an 8.3 out of 10 on IMDb, the premise of the Warren Ellis created series is, “A vampire hunter fights to save a besieged city from an army of otherworldly creatures controlled by Dracula.”

Similar to Arcane, the series has been lauded for its story and character development throughout its four-season run.

However, unlike Arcane, the tone of the series takes a darker approach leaning more towards horror than action. However, the series does make for a compelling watch.

2. Love, Death + Robots

Another Netflix animated series, that is more suited for adult consumption, is 2019’s Love, Death + Robots.

Rated an 8.5 out of 10 on IMDb, Love, Death + Robots went on to win 11 Emmy’s in 2020 for its ground-breaking narrative style. Now two seasons deep, there are a total of 26 episodes which are twenty-minutes long.

Each episode explores the titular themes of love, death, deaths or a combination based on the title. Moreover, each episode has a different animation style.

Therefore, if you are looking for a series that manages to pack a lot of story in a limited time, Love, Death + Robots is the watch for you.

3. The Dragon Prince

The Dragon Prince is considered as one of the most popular animated releases to be hosted on Netflix, and it maintains that even after the release of Arcane, it had the potential to knock its rankings a few notches down.

First premiering in 2018, the series has an approval rating of 8.4 out 10 on IMDb. Created by Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, the premise of the series is, “Two human princes forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”

The Dragon Prince has a total of three seasons to date, which provide ample content to binge watch.

Final thoughts

Arcane is one of the few series of 2021 that was highly anticipated, and following its release affirmed the excitement felt by gamers and League of Legend enthusiasts.

This is as the first season focussed on the origin story of Vi, which was voiced by musician and actress, Hailee Steinfeld.

However, Arcane is not the only animated series meant for a more mature audience that can be found on the leading paid subscription video-on-demand platforms.

Other animated series which have aspects that have made Arcane such a ratings winner include The Dragon Prince, amongst others.
