What We Do in the Shadows’ season ‘s release is imminent, and while there is no release date yet; here is what we know so far.
Overview
The adaptation of a television series into a film is a common practice. However, adapting a film into a television series is always a gamble, as it is never guaranteed that the film version will have the same reception as the series did, especially when you consider the change in the format.
However, one series has proved that it is possible. FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, which first premiered in 2019, was an immediate hit with viewers.
So much so that, ahead of the season three premiere, the series had already been renewed for a fourth season. While a release date has yet to be confirmed, there are details teased about the upcoming season detailed below.
What is What We Do in the Shadows about?
Written and directed by Jemaine Clement, What We Do in the Shadows was originally a 2014 film that was premised on, “Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.”
Clement would return as the character of the FX series which adapted the premise to, “A look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of three vampires, who’ve lived together for over 100 years, on Staten Island.”
The series follows the lives and times of central characters Nandor, Nadja, Colin Robinson, Lazlo and Guillermo.
What We Do in the Shadows: Season 4 discussed
Ahead of the premier of the third season in September 2021, FX had already confirmed the series’ renewal for a fourth season in August 2021.
The early renewal affirmed the positive reception of the show and its growing popularity. Therefore, by the time that season three concluded in October 2021, the storyline had left multiple avenues for season four to explore.
First was Nandor’s aim for romance, which was unsuccessful and resulted in his despondency. This was after learning that he and Nadja will be co-leading the Vampiric Council.
Nadja moved to London in order to lead the Vampiric Council. Guillermo learns that he has Van Helsing blood, and fans await to find out the implications of the change in Colin Robinson, as he becomes Baby Colin, the energy draining vampire.
More so as Lazlo stayed behind to take care of him.
As the series is believed to have wrapped shooting, more details have been shared on what fans can expect with the new season. The biggest of which being an expansion to the nuclear world, which was previously explored throughout the three seasons.
Confirmed: Expect more creatures and new locations
One aspect of the new season that has been confirmed is that the world of the story will be expanded. From Nadja joining the Supreme Worldwide Vampiric Council in London, to Nandor setting forth on his “Eat, Pray, Love” journey, which will allow for the introduction of new creatures.
Executive producer Paul Simms confirmed the matter when speaking with TV Insider, by teasing, “…that the new chapter will feature some of its most ambitious supernatural creatures yet.” Therefore, fans can look forward to more celebrity cameos with the upcoming fourth season.
Confirmed: We finally meet Guillermo’s family
In season three, Guillermo learnt that he has Van Helsing blood in his family. As a result, Simms confirmed that in the new season, we will finally get to meet the family.
He also in part revealed that in Season four, episode four, “you’re going to meet all of Guillermo’s family in a way that makes him very anxious.
We’ll learn that if he has Van Helsing DNA, then so does the rest of his family even though they might not realize it themselves.”
Going on to add, “We’ll also learn in Season 4 that Guillermo is feeling the effects of having dedicated 10 years of his life to these vampires and neglecting his family and his responsibilities to them and how he tries to make amends for that.”
Unconfirmed: Who will return as Baby Colin
One detail that has piqued the interest of fans is whether or not there will be a new character to embody Baby Colin. This is as Lazlo stayed behind to take care of “Baby Colin.”
When asked on the matter, Mark Proksch, who plays Colin was cryptic in his response when stating, “We don’t know if he’ll be the same guy – and I don’t know that, as of yet. It’s interesting. It poses some sort of psychological challenge when I come back in character form (and have to figure out) what that will be. I think that’s about all I can say.”
Final thoughts
What We Do in the Shadows has proved that movies can be successfully adapted into television series.
Though this is a remarkable achievement, this is not the case with all series adaptations, including shows like the adaptation of Cruel Intentions into a series, which did not even make it onto television.
In light of the renewal of the comedic horror series for season four, details have been teased about what to expect. However, a release date for the show has yet to be shared. However, it is expected for release sometime in 2022, in the fall.
