Queen of the South will not be returning, as the fifth season marked the end of the action-drama series, which can be binge-watched on Netflix.

The action-drama series, Queen of the South, kept fans entertained for five seasons.

The series told the story of the rise of a female drug pin, Teresa Mendoza, who was thrust into the position following the death of her boyfriend. The story is an adaptation of the book, La Reina del Sur.

In March 2021, after four seasons, and ahead of the premiere of the fifth season in April 2021, USA Network confirmed that the fifth season of the show would mark the last. To many people’s surprise, the network did not provide a reason for the decision.

What was Queen of the South about?

Queen of the South premiered on USA Network in 2016. The series told the whirlwind story of female protagonist, Teresa Mendoza, who was played by Alice Braga, and her journey to becoming the leader of the vast drug empire.

The series is an adaptation of the Telemundo, La Reina del Sur, which is based on the novel of the same name by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. The American spinoff was created by Mark Alexandre Fortin and Joshua John Miller.

Queen of the South season 6

Fans of the show will be disappointed to find out that there will be no sixth season of Queen of the South. The surprising decision to end the show was announced in March 2021, ahead of the April 2021 premiere of the fifth season.

The broadcaster of the series, USA Network, together with the Chairman of Entertainment Networks, Frances Berwick stated:

Queen of the South has captivated us with brilliant storytelling and bold, powerful characters. This series broke boundaries for the genre, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with this incredible team of creators, cast, and crew, along with our studio partners at 20th Television and UCP. As we close this final chapter, we look forward to a great season culminating in a finale that will give our fans the ending they deserve.”

Why was Queen of the South cancelled?

When the confirmation that Queen of the South was not set to return for a sixth season was released, both the network and production shared statements alluding to an amicable end to the action-drama series.

However, with all that said, no reason has been indicated as to the cause of the demise. Speculation has suggested that the dip in numbers during the fourth season of the show could have been the reason.

This coupled with the delays and difficulty in shooting the action-drama sequences during the pandemic. However, none of these speculations have been confirmed by either the network or the production company.

How did Alice Braga find out that Queen of the South had been cancelled?

According to Alice Braga, who fronted the production team’s announcement of the fifth season of Queen of the South, “We got shut down when we were shooting episode one and two. So when they shut us down, we knew it was our final season. I was very nervous because I was so excited to finish the cycle in the sense of telling this story. So when we got shut down, we had the script, so we just carried on through the shutdown, working on the script and getting ready to come back.”

While Queen of the South’s cancellation means that the show will no longer be airing on USA Network, viewers can still binge-watch the entire five seasons for their leisure.
