Kelly Murphy, winner of Tough as Nails, stated, “I want to prove to myself that I can still get the job done like I did on active duty.”
Tough as Nails is an American reality competition series that premiered on CBS on 9 July 2020. The show is hosted by Phil Keoghan and features contestants competing in challenges at job sites that test their toughness, with one participant being eliminated in each episode. The winner of the competition wins a grand cash prize of $200 000.
The first season was won by Marine Corps veteran, Kelly “Murph” Murphy, with drywaller, Danny Moody finishing second, and forestry tech, Myles V. Polk placing third. Murphy received $208 000 and a Ford Super Duty truck for winning the season. Murph is from Paragon, a small town in Ray Township, Morgan County in Indiana. He is said to have always been an athletic child who even took karate lessons.
He is a Marine Corps veteran and had served the force for 22 years. He retired from service in June 2012. Following his retirement, he worked as an adjunct faculty member at Central Texas College and Columbia College. He also worked as a human resources and training manager at Lowe’s Home Improvement for a while. The 47-year-old veteran is currently the Director of Military and Veteran Service at the University of Central Missouri.
While most of the Tough as Nails contestants were open about their personal lives, Kelly decided to keep things quiet regarding his relationship status. There is no telling if he is in a relationship or married. Fans noticed that he shares photos of his children on social media platforms. He has two daughters and a son. One daughter reportedly followed in her father’s footsteps and joined the Navy.
In his spare time, Murphy is a fitness model and influencer. He often shares pictures and videos of himself in his natural habitat – which is working out and lifting weights in the gym. Murphy entered the competition to prove to himself that he can still get the job done as he used to in the military. When he won the competition, he proved himself to the world.
On 14 April 2021, Tough as Nails was renewed for two additional seasons.
