2NE1 announced its disbandment in 2016, after seven years together, due to multiple scandals which affected the reputation of the band as a whole.
2NE1 was known as one of the most popular female k-pop groups since its formation in 2009 under YG Entertainment. Since then, the group had accumulated multiple accolades, however, the collective’s reputation was tainted by scandals which threatened the group’s status in the k-pop industry. In 2015, one of the members, Park Bom, was involved in a drug scandal, which was reportedly badly handled by YG Entertainment and contributed to 2NE1’s indefinite hiatus during that year.
After sweeping the rumours under the rug for over a year, in 2016, YG Entertainment announced that the group would officially be splitting up, in order to pursue solo careers. In a statement from April 2016, the management company stated, “2NE1’s exclusive contract expired in May 2016, and with Minzy leaving 2NE1, we have come to the decision to officially disband after extensive discussion with the remaining members. As 2NE1 was YG’s official girl group for seven years, we cannot begin to express how we feel, but we determined that it was too difficult to continue.”
The members have individually spoken out about the group’s split, with each one citing different reasons for the group’s demise. Ultimately, it was decided that each woman should focus on their solo career, as their future together appeared to be complicated and uncertain.
