Why did Clare Crawley and Dale Moss break up?

Clare Crawley made history as the first Bachelorette to end her season early, due to the undeniable connection she had with Dale Moss, which ultimately ended in a breakup a few months later.

Clare Crawley featured as the lead on season 16 of ABC’s The Bachelorette in 2020, which saw her prematurely ending her time on the show after deciding that her connection with Dale Moss was unmatched. The couple’s journey began on the first night, when Clare offered Dale the first impression rose, leading to a proposal on week five of the show. The sudden twist left fans of The Bachelorette in shock, as it has never happened before that the lead makes a decision before the final two.

The couple documented their relationship on social media throughout the latter part of 2020, proving that they were still going strong. However, on Tuesday, 19 January 2021, Dale released a seemingly joint statement announcing their breakup, which has since been deleted.

He stated, “I wanted to share with you all, that Clare and I have decided to go our separate ways. We appreciate the love and support we’ve received from so many people, but this is the healthiest decision for both of us at this time. We strongly believe in leading with love and always remaining true to oneself – something our families have taught and instilled in us throughout our lives. We only hope the best things for one another.”

Clare did not comment on the matter for several days, until she took to Instagram on Thursday, 21 January 2021, to explain that she was not a part of the supposedly mutual statement released by Dale. She explained, “Speaking for myself, my intentions with this relationship have always been very clear, so the truth is I’m crushed.” Clare did not expand on why they had broken up, but suggested that she was invested in their relationship and he was not.

In an Instagram Live video on Saturday, 30 January 2021, Dale shared feelings of regret with his followers, as documented by Entertainment Tonight. He stated, “I talk so much with family and friends about everything that’s gone on. This situation with Clare, it f**king sucked, you know. This has f**king rocked me. I felt so many emotions, so much guilt, but also so much confusion, so much hurt, and I know that we both have. And looking for so many answers before this even happened on how to make things better. But the reality of it is, life isn’t perfect and we make mistakes. I’ve made a lot of them, I know we all do. My pops would always say, ‘[you’ve] got to hurt before you heal.’ I’ve been f**king hurting. A lot.”
