Why did DELTARUNE: Chapter 2 take so long?

DELTARUNE: Chapter 2 was released in September 2021, three years after Chapter 1 was released, with the conceptualisation of the world of the game suggested as the reason.

In 2018, fans of UNDERTALE were introduced to the DELTARUNE: Chapter 1 game. Created and published by Toby Fox, the game was an immediate hit amongst gamers, as it introduced a new world, new characters and a gaming experience that was fun for avid gamers to play. What gamers did not know was that it would be three years before Chapter 2 was released. In September 2021, Fox, through the DELTARUNE website, confirmed the imminent release of Chapter 2.

True to his word, he released Chapter 2 in the same month. When sharing the announcement of Chapter 2’s availability, in his foreword, Fox stated, “The world has been really tough for everybody recently. So I decided to release DELTARUNE Chapter 2 for free. I guess like a pet cat that drops bugs at your doorstep, I can, with some pride, show you the weird things I’ve been doing. I’m not sure if it will help, but I hope so.”

After the release of the new world, Fox penned a statement speaking on why there was a delay in the release of Chapter 2. He alluded to the conceptualisation as the reasons for the delay, together with ensuring the quality of the gaming experience. Fox also highlighted that unlike Chapter 1, which he created alone, Chapter 2 was a team effort.

He explained, “A lot of things happened with the development of the game. Engines changed. Areas got redesigned. More and more people were hired. Two people I want to thank specifically are Sarah and Temmie.” He went on to add that Temmie’s focus was drawing the animated world, while Sarah was responsible for the backend details of the game.

Following the release of the game and its continued success, Fox confirmed that Chapters 3, 4 and 5 are set to be released as a single release. Moreover, that the wait is not going to be as long as the three years it took to develop Chapter 2. No formal word has been shared yet on the release of the subsequent chapters.
