Netflix announced the cancellation of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina in December 2020, due to low ratings and an impending lawsuit that caused trouble for the series.
Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was cancelled after its fourth instalment, as announced by showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who tweeted, “Our final chilling adventure begins this fall on Netflix. Hold on tight. So proud of this show, so grateful to everyone who worked on it!” Although Netflix has remained tight-lipped on the ratings of the show, it is suspected that the cancellation stemmed from the dwindling views of the series throughout the years, in addition to poor reviews on social media.
The series also generated negative attention in 2018 when The Satanic Temple filed a $50 million copyright lawsuit that accused the streaming platform of copying its Statue of Baphomet. Although the parties are believed to have eventually agreed on a settlement, viewers subsequently became wary of the show’s tendency to incorporate supposedly satanic symbolism, which led to a further decrease in its viewership. With The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina currently not available on Netflix, Riverdale is the only Archie Comics show left on the platform.
