Why did Netflix remove The Office?

Netflix removed NBC’s The Office from its streaming platform in January 2021, so that the show would be exclusively available on NBC’s own platform, Peacock.

Netflix took to Twitter in June 2019 to announce that one of its most-watched series, The Office, would no longer be streamed on its platform. The widely popular show was originally released on NBC in 2005 and went on to have eight seasons before its conclusion in 2013. Thereafter, the show was available for streaming in its entirety on Netflix, until it was removed from the platform’s library in January 2021.

According to Netflix, NBC decided to take back the rights of The Office so that it would be exclusively viewed on NBCUniversal’s new streaming platform, Peacock. Peacock was launched in April 2020 and has a range of old and new NBC productions available for viewing. Netflix tweeted, “We’re sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform – but members can binge watch the show to their hearts’ content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021.”
