Why Space Jam: A New Legacy disappointed fans

Warner Bros’ Space Jam: A New Legacy left fans disappointed, as they stated that it “misses everything that was magical about the spirit of Space Jam.”

Space Jam: A New Legacy was released by Warner Bros Pictures on Friday, 16 July 2021. The film serves as a standalone sequel to Space Jam (1996). The film stars basketball player, LeBron James as a fictionalized version of himself, along with Khris Davis, Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green in live-action roles, while Eric Bauza, Zendaya and Jeff Berman voice the Looney Tunes characters. The sequel follows Lebron teaming up with the Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against digitized champions to rescue his son from a rogue artificial intelligence program.

Fans waited for 25 years for the Space Jam sequel to be released, however, the movie disappointed viewers. Space Jam: A New Legacy only received a rating of 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while it received a rating of 3.6 out of 10 on IMDb.

Viewers created a thread on Reddit to express their disappointment at the movie. One fan wrote, “The second I saw that they were going to include things from both Casablanca and a clockwork orange I knew it was going to be a total disaster.” Another fan stated, “The first Space Jam is an awful but an enjoyable movie. However, everything about the new one screams that it is an awful and unenjoyable movie.”

According to The Daily Beast, the film’s animation and effects were “ugly,” further stating that “Lebron James makes Michael Jackson look like the Meryl Streep of athlete-actors.” The film reportedly misses everything that was magical about the spirit of Space Jam.

Despite all the negative comments, there are fans who expressed that they enjoyed the film. One fan stated, “It looks like a goofy and fun movie featuring a ton of recognizable characters from various properties that’ll entertain you for 90 minutes.”
