Why The X Factor was cancelled

The X Factor became a staple for British and American television viewers; however, the show has been cancelled, allegedly due to a decreased viewership.

ITV has spoken out about the future of The X Factor. The network confirmed on Thursday, 29 July 2021, that there are “no current plans” to resurrect the singing competition. After multiple rumours and speculation that Simon Cowell had axed the show, channel bosses have confirmed that they are not looking to go ahead with the show.

The X Factor first premiered in 2004, and judges on the show have included Louis Walsh, Cheryl, Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger. A United States version of the show ran for three seasons.

The show became a staple for British television viewers, and later became one for the American audience, with Cowell at the helm and various music enthusiasts taking to the judging panel over the years. The singing competition attracted a regular audience of more than 10 million a decade ago, with more than 17 million viewers tuning in to see the winner of the 2010 season. However, the viewership was reportedly disappointing in subsequent years, with rival shows such as American Idol, Dancing with The Stars and The Voice prospering

In 2018, an average of five million people watched Dalton Harris being crowned the winner, when the judges were Robbie Williams, Louis Tomlinson and Ayda Field. The show was completely absent in 2019, with a celebratory edition taking its place.

In 2020, it was revealed that Cowell decided to give it another year off. However, it now appears as if the show might not return. Even though many people walked away from the early rounds of the The X Factor devastated, there have been a lot of successful contestants who now have brilliant careers.

One Direction finished third in season seven of the show in 2010, but signed to Cowell’s label, Syco. The boy band dominated the charts with four number one singles and albums. However, all five members, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, have gone on to pursue their solo careers.

It was announced in June 2021 that music enthusiasts’ attention has now turned to a fresh panel of judges in the new upcoming musical game show, Walk The Line. The premiere date of the new show has yet to be announced.
