While there has been discourse around YouTube couples and their demise, that has not stopped the occurrence of YouTubers sharing the beginning and end of their relationships.
Every year, without fail, there are always announcements of breakups that shock the public, be it popular Hollywood couples or beloved social media stars. More so, as there has been a convergence between social media stars and mainstream celebrities. This year proved to be no different, as some of the public’s favourite couples have called it quits this year, much to the surprise of their fans and followers.
However, with YouTube couples, the matter of break up videos has been a matter of interest in recent years. YouTube thought channels like Tee Noir, have created videos on the phenomenon of YouTube relationship channels. Specifically, how these relationship channels have turned into the butt of YouTube jokes as more have been breaking up. This is as the fad of relationship YouTube channels was short lived, considering that its popularity was in 2018. By 2020, most of the leading YouTube relationships had crumbled. Think Jeffree Star and Nate, Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul, Liza Koshy and David Dobrik, and Jaclyn Hill and Jon Hill.
Despite the ridicule that YouTube relationship channels and couples have received, that has not stopped new blooming relationships from happening and meeting their own end. Therefore, as the year is set to draw to an end in a few weeks, let us take a look back t some of the most surprising breakups. This will specifically look at the relationships of influencers and YouTubers.
TikTok and YouTube breakups 2021:
Addison Rae and Bryce Hall
Addison Rae and Bryce Hall’s relationship was short-lived, as the couple began publicly dating in November 2020. However, considering that they are social media stars, the access the public has to their lives can even make a five-month long relationship seem like years. In March 2021, the couple called it quits amidst infidelity rumours on Hall’s side, a matter he has denied, but Rae seemingly confirmed in subsequent interviews.
JoJo Siwa and Kylie Prew
JoJo Siwa’s first public same-sex relationship was with best friend, Kylie Prew. After nine months of dating, they called it quits, with Siwa addressing the breakup in November 2021. This was during her feature on Paris Hilton’s This Is Paris podcast, where she confirmed that they have maintained their friendship and added, “I’m really lucky that I didn’t lose her completely because, you know, even though relationships end, friendships don’t have to end.”
Jordyn Jones and Jordan Beau
Beloved content creators and influencers, Jordyn Jones and Jordan Beau announced their breakup in July 2021, after three years together. Following the news of their split circulating, Jones posted the following post, which asserted, “Now to all the fans, just know this was my decision. He did absolutely nothing wrong. It’s just time for me to be alone and put myself first. I’m heartbroken, with that being said, I’m hurting him & that’s something I will always regret.”
De’arra Taylor and Ken Walker
De’arra and Ken launched their joint channel titled DK4L back in 2014, with a biography which in part read, “Yes it’s us, De’arra and Ken #DK4L your favourite couple. Showing how a relationship should generally be.” In the almost seven years together, the channel amassed over 6 million subscribers. However, in August 2021, the couple shared a video on their channel announcing their split and that each would venture into creating their own individual YouTube channel.
Besides asserting that their breakup was amicable, the then couple also penned a statement in their comments section that read, “It’s been a long ride gang thank you guys for all the love and support throughout these several years and now all the love and support you will show us both as we expand our individual platforms here on YouTube. Thank you guys so much forever and always.”
Karin DeStilo and Skyler Felt
One of the most popular YouTube lesbian couples was Karin DeStilo and Skyler Felt. The couple made their joint debut in 2017, on DeStilo’s originally individual channel, which they turned into a joint channel. In the four years of their tumultuous relationship, they managed to stay together and amass over 1.03 million subscribers. However, in July 2021, they would post their last video.
Ironically, the video was of the couple moving into their new apartment. Without releasing a video or making a public announcement, the two broke up. It was first revealed when DeStilo posted an image of her new partner. Moreover, in September 2021, Felt created her own channel after DeStilo posted her new partner.
