The final film in the Divergent franchise was never released, which has left fans uncertain of how exactly The Divergent Series: Ascendant would have ended.
The Divergent series, like many of the popular book-to-film franchises before it, decided to split its final book into two movies.
But since The Divergent Series: Ascendant film never quite got off the ground, everything that was supposed to happen to bring closure to the series, remains a mystery to this day.
Why the final book was split into two films
When Veronica Roth’s Divergent book series hit the shelves in 2012, it did not take long for the dystopian trilogy to climb to the top of the New York Times Bestsellers List.
And today, more than 32 million copies of the Divergent books have been sold worldwide.
This is why it came as no surprise in 2014 when the studios announced that the final book in the series, titled Allegiant would be split into two separate films, titled The Divergent Series: Allegiant (part one) and The Divergent Series: Ascendant (part two).
Of course, other popular book-to-film franchises like Harry Potter, The Twilight Saga and even The Hunger Games all followed a similar format with their last books and this had become a popular way for film studios to stretch out the popularity of these franchises (and their profits) just a little bit more.
Everything that was supposed to happen in Allegiant part 2
Unfortunately, unlike all of these other beloved franchises, the Divergent franchise never really got the ending it deserved. Part one, The Divergent Series: Allegiant film, was officially released in theatres in 2016, exactly as planned.
However, because of the diminishing box-office returns for this film and a number of behind-the-scenes scuffles, the second film was never released on its scheduled release date of March 2017.
This left fans with tons of unanswered questions about where this movie’s plot would have gone.
The third film in the series ended with a major cliffhanger, which saw Tris and Four finally telling the rest of the world about Bureau of Genetic Welfare’s wicked plan to wipe everyone’s memories in order to start over with a new society.
Fans who have read through the Divergent series will likely already know that (spoilers ahead) Tris dies at the end of the Allegiant book.
However, the outcry over Roth’s decision to kill this character off had been so overwhelming, that many fans were still holding out hope that the Divergent movie franchise (which had already strayed from its source material in the past) would find a way to keep Tris alive.
Unfortunately, now that the plans for a potential television show have also been canned, it seem unlikely that fans will ever get the satisfaction of knowing how everything would have ended.
Why the plot of Allegiant part 2 is still such a mystery
It may seem strange that the plot of a film, which is based on an already-released book, would be such a mystery.
But besides the fact that none of the cast has given any indication as to which direction the final film was going in, the third film had changed so many details, that the story no longer really resembled that of its source material.
This includes leaving out key characters, such as Tori’s brother and Amar, changing Tris’s relationship with her brother, and of course, Evelyn’s ascent to power.
Why was Allegiant part 2 cancelled?
There are a number of factors which likely contributed to part 2 of Allegiant never being released. To start with, the Divergent series failed to capitalize on the popular cost-saving measure of filming its last two films simultaneously.
This meant that the studio started off on at a considerable disadvantage with this second film, after the first film, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, only raked in about $179 million at the global box office.
To make matters worse, director, Robert Schwentke, also decided not to return for The Divergent Series: Ascendant.
Will the The Divergent Series: Ascendant film ever be released?
Despite the initial fanfare around the Divergent series, the final The Divergent Series: Ascendant movie really never got off the ground.
After having its budget cut owing to The Divergent Series: Allegiant’s poor performance and having to replace its director so late on, the film eventually got pushed back to later in 2017, before ultimately being downgraded to a possible television series.
However, with so many of the Divergent film franchise’s stars, including Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Miles Teller, coming out to say that they would not return for a small screen finale, it seems improbable that the series will ever get its final film.
