Grace’s story on Desperate Housewives explained

It is revealed in season seven of Desperate Housewives that Grace Sanchez is the biological daughter of Gaby and Carlos Solis.

Desperate Housewives follows the stories of four friends facing various ups and downs in their lives.

One of these friends, Gabrielle Solis, finds out in season seven of the show that her daughter was switched at birth, and that her biological daughter is actually Grace Sanchez.

About Desperate Housewives

The ABC hit show, Desperate Housewives, follows the lives of four very different women named Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo, Bree Van de Kamp, and Gabrielle Solis.

These women live in the close-knit community of houses located on Wisteria Lane.

Throughout Desperate Housewives’s eight seasons, these women’s late friend, Mary Alice Young (who passed away just before the beginning of the first season), narrates their lives and decisions.

She also provides some much-needed insight as to why this seemingly perfect group of friends so often find themselves at the center of much larger plots and conspiracies.

Grace’s story on Desperate Housewives explained

When audiences were first introduced to Gabrielle “Gaby” Solis, the Wisteria Lane friend group’s highly demanding and high-maintenance ex-model, she seemed like nothing more than an impulsive and shallow unhappy housewife, who would stop at nothing to get her way.

However, as the narrative progressed, Gaby, like all of Mary Alice Young’s friends, eventually grew to appreciate and cherish all of the relationships in her life. This is especially true when it came to Gaby’s complicated relationship with motherhood.

It was revealed in the fifth season of Desperate Housewives that Gaby and Carlos had remained together and had also welcomed two daughters, named Juanita and Celia, during the five-year time jump between the fourth and fifth seasons of the television series.

And although watching Gaby trying to raise her two daughters on her and Carlos’s limited funds would have been entertaining enough, true Desperate Housewives fans will know that there is always another plot twist and turn to the story.

In Gaby’s case, this twist came when she and Carlos found out that Juanita (their legal daughter) had actually been switched at birth by a drunken nurse with their biological daughter, Grace.

Grace had been raised by her legal parents, Hector and Carmen Sanchez.

Grace Sanchez officially made her debut in the fourth episode of the seventh season of the series, which is titled “The Thing That Counts is What’s Inside”, when Gaby and Carlos organize a meet-up between the two intertwined families.

Although it was clear from the very first moment that they meet that Gaby had an instant bond with her biological daughter, their relationship falls apart just a few episodes later, when Grace and her legal mother, Carmen, have to flee the country in order to escape the immigration authorities.

Who played Grace on Desperate Housewives?

Carlos and Gaby’s biological daughter, Grace Sanchez, is portrayed by Ceci Balagot on the show.

After playing the small role of Grace in this show in 2010, and finishing a few guest-starring roles on shows like ER, Balagot continued acting and even went on to secure roles in other well-known shows.

This includes the role of Isadora Smackle in Girl Meets World (2014), Clara in Dispatches From Elsewhere (2020) and even Frankie Stein in the highly-anticipated 2022 Monster High: The Movie film.

What happened to Grace after season seven of Desperate Housewives?

The very last time that audiences got to see Cecilia Balagot’s Grace on Desperate Housewives was when she hugged Gaby goodbye in the ninth episode of the seventh season, which was titled “Pleasant Little Kingdom”.

After this, Grace’s character is only mentioned in passing during conversations with Juanita’s therapist later on in the show.

However, Gaby does write Grace a letter later and she even adopts a doll which looks remarkably similar to Grace to help her process the grief of losing her biological daughter.

Where to watch Desperate Housewives

The fact that Gaby and Grace’s relationship was cut short so unexpectedly may just be one of the most tragic storylines, among all of the other murder mysteries and cover-ups explored on Desperate Housewives.

Eva Longoria (the actress who played Gaby for all eight seasons of the series) has said that she would be “the first to sign up” for a Desperate Housewives reboot.

But until such a reboot is officially announced, re-watching the show is the only real way to re-live all the ups and downs of Grace’s story.

Desperate Housewives is available to stream on Freevee and Hulu, and the series can also be purchased from platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play and Vudu.
