Netflix’s Locke & Key may have been a favorite among subscribers and fans of the original comic books,.
But Netflix and the Locke & Key showrunners already decided that there would be no season four of the show before the third and final season even started airing in 2022.
Is there a season 4 of Locke and Key?
Locke & Key has been one of Netflix’s most successful adaptations of a popular comic book series in the last decade.
However, unfortunately, Netflix has also confirmed that the show will not be renewed for a fourth season on the platform.
Locke & Key has now officially joined a long list of Netflix Original shows that were cancelled after three seasons.
This cancellation announcement was already made on the official Netflix Instagram page in April 2022, just before the premiere of the show’s third season.
Though fans of the series were initially devastated by this news, the Locke & Key showrunners, Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, did confirm that this cancellation news did not shock them and that they had planned for the show to end with its third season.
The delays in the first three seasons of the show
The reality is that the production for Locke & Key has been messy since the beginning of the show.
In fact, the first season’s production was delayed so much during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, that Netflix upgraded the series to a special two-season renewal for its second and third seasons, which premiered in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
Why did the showrunners plan for the show to end with season 3?
Cuse and Averill decided to end the series at this point, because they felt like three seasons was “the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion.”
So, while it might be sad for fans that Locke & Key was cancelled, it is good that the show had a planned conclusion that was well thought-out and did not end unexpectedly mid-season or between seasons.
What are the chances that Locke & Key will be picked up again?
Though there is certainly enough of the original Locke & Key comic by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez left for new creators to draw from, it is unlikely that Locke & Key will be picked up by a different streaming service or network following its cancellation on Netflix.
This is because the show had such a conclusive ending and several of the cast members have already moved on to new projects.
