Kakegurui season 3 may not be coming out on Netflix at all if the show is not renewed by MAPPA.
Though Netflix has the licensing rights to stream Kakegurui outside of Japan, the decision to bring the show back for a third season lies with MAPPA.
This also means that it is unlikely that Kakegurui will return for a season three, while MAPPA is focusing on other projects.
When is Kakegurui season 3 coming out on Netflix?
Kakegurui is one of the most interesting shows in Netflix’s anime line-up and fans have been waiting for an update on what will happen to the series ever since the spin-off, Kakegurui Twin, was released on the platform in 2022.
Kakegurui was initially adapted for television from the Japanese manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura by MAPPA.
Netflix only acquired the licensing rights to stream the anime outside of Japan at a later stage.
As a result, the decision to renew the show likely lies more in the hands of MAPPA than Netflix, and so far, neither of these entities have announced official plans to renew the series.
Unfortunately, the fact that MAPPA has already announced several big projects for this year makes it even less likely that a third season of Kakegurui will be released internationally or on Netflix at all.
What will the plot be if Kakegurui is renewed?
The second season of Kakegurui ended with a confusing outcome to the student body president election.
Many fans assume that this means that if there is a third season of Kakegurui, it will follow the Election Arc from the original manga.
But the story has divulged so much from the source material over the years that it is difficult to determine if this will turn out to be true.
Is there enough material for a third season?
The original manga on which MAPPA’s Kakegurui is based has 14 volumes, with 82 total chapters.
So far, the twelve total episodes of the first two seasons of the anime series, have covered roughly 56 of these chapters.
This means that there is certainly enough of the source material left for MAPPA to cover in the third season if they do decide to renew the show.
Which projects does MAPPA have lined up?
Though MAPPA has not announced renewal plans for Kakegurui yet, they have announced plans for three other high-profile projects.
This includes Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3, and Jujutsu Kaisen season 2.
This means that even if MAPPA does decide to renew Kakegurui, production for the show will likely only start once all of these other projects have been finalized.
