The Rings of Power season one finale revealed why Galadriel made the three rings, which is to prevent the concentration of power being in a single person’s hands.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a hit Amazon Prime Video original series that is based on the events that took place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which were written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Season one of The Rings of Power is based on the long-feared re-emergence of Sauron, who poses a threat to Middle-Earth.
As such, the season one finale reveals that Galadriel decided to create three rings with Celebrimor and Elrond in order to prevent the concentration of the power from being in a single person’s hands.
How many rings are there in The Lord of the Rings-verse?
The Lord of the Rings is centred around a single ring, which was created by the Dark Lord Sauron in an attempt to control all other life. However, The Rings of Power was the first adaptation that finally made sense of the plurality of the title.
But as readers of J.R.R Tolkien would know, there are more rings, which is told through the song which describes there being three rings for elves, seven rings for dwarves, and nine rings for men.
It is believed that the focus was on the One Ring to make adapting the series of books into film easier.

Rings of Power: Why did Galadriel make the rings?
Season one, episode eight, which was the season one finale, revealed the reason for forging the three rings to viewers. This was one of the major premises explored throughout the first season of The Rings of Power.
Initially, Galadriel had stopped Celebrimor from forging the rings when she discovered that Sauron was disguising himself as Halbrand.
But after confronting Halbrand about his true identity and discovering the one object would not be enough or two, coupled with fact that the fading light of Eladar was a manifestation of the Great Tree decaying, Galadriel knew she had to do something to preserve whatever remaining concentration of power remained.
This led to the conversation between Galadriel, Celebrimor, and Elrond making the decision to forge three rings.
They explained, “One will always corrupt. Two will divide…” with Celebrimor finishing her thought by adding, “with three, there is balance.” Hence, at the end, Celebrimor used what little mithril he had left to forge the three rings.
Each ring that was created had a name and special properties that would help protect elves from fading away as foreseen by Gil-galad. Gil-galad was the first bearer of one of the rings, Nilya.
Cirdan was the first bearer of Narya, and Galadriel was the bearer of Nenya. Each ring has specific elements and magical properties, including:
1. Nilya
Nilya is the Ring of Air, despite the fact that it is blue in colour, as its gemstone is a sapphire and the ring is made of gold.
This ring is considered the most powerful of the three rings for elves, but the specificity in terms of the powers is never established. However, we do know that while it was in Elrond’s hands, it amplified his healing powers greatly.
Elrond was the second bearer of the ring after it was passed down to him by Gil-galad. In Elrond’s possession, it remained safe and was not used for as long as the One Ring was still intact.
2. Narya
Narya is the Ring of Fire. It was forged while Celebrimbor was listening to Johnny Cash, and it has a ruby as its gemstone.
However, the metal used to forge the ring remains unconfirmed, though many believe that it is made out of silver since Celebrimbor mentioned it while it was being made.
The ring has powers of resistance to the weariness of time, as well as the power to inspire others to resist tyranny, domination, and despair.
First taken by Cirdan for safekeeping, he later gave it to Gandalf as he recognised his true nature as a Maiar from Valinor.
3. Nenya
In The Rings of Power, Nenya is the Ring of Water, which has an adamant gemstone that is made out of mithril as it was confirmed by J.R.R Tolkien. Nenya has powers of preservation, protection, and arguably concealment from evil.
This is based on the fact that after Celebrimbor gave Galadriel the ring directly, her kingdom and the realm of Lothlorien became almost impossible for the Dark Lord Sauron to access.
The ring in Galadriel’s hands is the reason for one of the most iconic lines from the universe, as she revealed it to Frodo and said, “To be a Ring Bearer is to be alone.”
