Euphoria season 3 was confirmed ahead of the season two finale, however, the matter of when the new season will come out is still unconfirmed.
On Sunday, 27 February 2022, season two of HBO Max’s hit teen-drama series, Euphoria, concluded its eight-episode run.
Ahead of the season finale, HBO Max had already confirmed that the series was renewed for a third season, which means that fans will get at least one more instalment of the adventures of Rue, Jules, Cassie, Maddy and the rest of the gang.
While the series has been greenlit for a third season, a few matters have still been left in the air.
The biggest of which being whether Barbie Ferreira will return, in light of her alleged altercation with Sam Levinson, that allegedly resulted in her walking off the set and her reduced screen time in the second season.
What is Euphoria?
Euphoria first premiered on HBO Max in 2019. The teen-drama series was created by writer and director Sam Levinson.
The premise of the series is detailed as, “A look at life for a group of high school students as they grapple with issues of drugs, sex, and violence,” according to IMDb.
The first season was anchored by lead and executive producer Zendaya as Rue, and her relationship with Jules, played by Hunter Schafer.
However, the second season expanded further to focus on the lives of her friends and schoolmates, including Sydney Sweeney as Cassie, Alexa Demie as Maddy, Angus Cloud as Fezco, and Jacob Elordi as Nate.
Euphoria: season 3 confirmed and what we know so far
The third season of Euphoria was confirmed ahead of the season two finale. However, a renewal of the hit series was already on the table following the premiere of the first episode of season two.
This is as the season two premiere allegedly had more engagement on social media than that of the Game of Thrones series finale. Moreover, the series reportedly managed to double its viewership with the release of the new season compared to the first.
While the series might have been confirmed for a third season, a few details have yet to be ironed out. First, is the matter of when the season will be released. Secondly, the matter of whether the new season will see Barbie Ferreira return as Kat Hernandez.
Lastly, while the season two premiere did provide a somewhat conclusive ending for Rue, it did leave many storylines still up in the air.
When is Euphoria season 3 coming out?
There has been no confirmation on when Euphoria season three will be released.
Considering that there was a three-year delay between season one and two, with a two-part special released in 2021, fans are hoping that they will not have to wait as long, as the delay was largely attributed to the COVID-19.
However, while the pandemic might not be the cause for the extended wait, it might be two years until Euphoria season three is released.
This is as the title character and executive producer Zendaya is already scheduled to shoot Dune 2, and a romantic-drama called Challengers. Therefore, we can look towards a 2024 release of season three.
Will Barbie Ferreira return to Euphoria?
In season two, Kat Hernandez arguably had less screen time as season played out. Moreover, considering that her storyline was one of the most pivotal of the first season, it was awkward for fans to see Kat seemingly fade into the background.
However, it is alleged that this was due to behind-the-scenes drama between actress Barbie Ferreira and show creator Sam Levinson, as they allegedly shared heated words after Ferreira questioned the direction Kat was taking in the latest season.
While Ferreira has not suggested that she is leaving the series, she did comment on Kat’s absence in this season by stating,
“Kat’s journey this season is a little more internal and a little mysterious to the audience. She is secretly going through a lot of existential crises.”
What can we expect from Euphoria season 3?
The biggest question for the third season is whether Rue will stay clean, considering that for two seasons, the primary premise was watching the teenager battle her addiction.
Now that she is clean, will she remain clean? Moreover, what will be the state of her relationship with Jules, and in extension Elliot and Jules.
For the other characters like Nate, the fans are curious to find out the implication of Nate having his father arrested and him being “outed.”
For Cassie and Maddy, the question is whether their relationship will be mended after Cassie chose Nate over Maddy, only to be dumped by Nate. Lastly, with Fezco losing his brother, will he go to jail and what will the extent of his relationship with Lexi be?
Final thoughts
Euphoria, despite the three-year gap between season one and season two with a two-part special in between, has only grown in its popularity according to reports of season two’s performance.
Especially, if it is true that season two doubled in viewership numbers compared to the first season.
While the series has been confirmed for a third season, a few matters are still in the air. This includes the release date, accommodating Zendaya’s demanding schedule and the behind-the-scenes drama that saw Kat fade into the background in this season.
