Canelo Alvarez allegedly pushed and punched Caleb Plant after his opponent allegedly referred to his mother with a slur and brought up his past misconducts.
In September 2021, the boxing world enjoyed a pre-match preview between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb P
lant. The two were involved in a scuffle during the match announcement press conference. The scuffle started after Canelo was seen pushing Plant.
Thereafter, Plant attempted to retaliate by throwing a left punch – a punch which Canelo avoided and subsequently landed two open-handed slaps across Plant’s face. At the end of the scuffle, Plant reportedly sustained a cut on his left hand.
Viewers and members of the media were surprised by Canelo pushing Plant. This is as the Mexican Bruiser, as he is affectionately referred to, is not known to be a hothead. On the contrary, he is considered to be generally a composed person.
The same can be said as a boxer, he is not known to be heated, even during the pre-emptive trash-talking ahead of a boxing match, hence the fascination with the cause of his outburst.
In response, Canelo claimed that the reason for his reaction was Plant calling his mother a motherf**ker.
Moreover, he reportedly made it clear that, “He can say whatever he wants to say to me, but not to my mom.” It is also alleged that Plant even brought up the allegations of Canelo using illegal supplements, which resulted in his six-month break from the sport.
Ironically, and possibly serving as sweet justice for Canelo, when the match between the two took place on Saturday, 6 November 2021, Canelo came out victorious through a knockout in the eleventh round of the match.
Canelo acknowledged Plant’s efforts by stating, “We don’t have to take anything away from Caleb Plant. He’s a great fighter and he made a great effort tonight, but in the end, we came out with the win. That’s all that matters really. So, even though we had that frustration in the first five rounds, the second half of the fight was ideal.”
