Why did Ozark start with a car crash?

ozark

Season four of Ozark opens with a flash-forward scene of the Byrde’s getting into a car accident, which has resulted in many asking the question, who will survive?

Ozark is the original Netflix hit crime-drama series which premiered in 2017 and was an immediate hit with viewers.

From the thrilling suspense to the continuous plot twists, fans have been hooked on the Byrde family’s pursuit of freedom from the Navarro cartel.

The fans are currently counting down to part two of season four, which will be the series finale, so that they can find out what happens in the Byrde family in a flash-forward car accident scene.

A scene that catapulted the viewers into a pool of uncertainty, with no reveal as to who was hurt or even possibly died in the accident.

What is Ozark about?

Created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, Ozark is the thrilling-suspense crime drama which follows Marty Byrde, a financial advisor that“drags his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he must launder money to appease a drug boss.”

In the title roles of the series are acclaimed actors, Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, who play married couple Martin “Marty”Byrde and Wendy Byrde.

For three and a half seasons, we have watched as the family launders money for the Navarro cartel through acquiring businesses in the Ozarks. All the while attempting to earn their freedom.

Why did Ozark start with a car crash?

Fans of the crime drama waited close to two years after season three for the release of the first half of the season series finale.

This is as season three was made available on Netflix in March 2020, and season four, part one was shared in January 2022.

While the first half, which consisted of seven episodes, had enough drama to keep fans guessing as to how the second half will unfold, it’s the opening car accident sequence that continues to pique fans’ interests.

The scene in question features the Byrde family seemingly moving away from the Ozarks. However, while he was driving, Marty lost control of the car, which caused it to swerve, resulting in what looked like a severe car accident.

The flash-forward ends without revealing who was injured or possibly even died in the accident, before cutting to Marty and Wendy in Mexico in the present.

Seemingly, instigating the looming question on whose life ended during the car crash was the purpose of the flash-forward sequence.

Ozark’s Chris Mundy on opening car crash scene

As season four, part two is yet to come out and the question of the implications of the car crash scene have yet to be revealed, Ozark’s showrunner, Chris Mundy addressed the scene with TVLine, stating:

“There’s a feeling on our show all the time where anything can happen at any time, and I like that unease. We felt like people might be confused for a split second but then when the (scene cuts) to Mexico they’d realise (that it was a flash-forward).”

Mundy went on to tease that they too have not decided on the implications of the car accident yet.

Who dies in Ozark’s season 4, part 1 opening scene?

In light of Ozark not sharing who dies in the flash-forward opening scene of season four, part one, fans have taken the liberty of coming up with conspiracies as to who will die.

Interestingly, fans do not believe that Marty or Wendy will die from the accident. Instead, the general consensus is that either one or both of their children, Charlotte and Jonah will die in the accident.

Fans believe it is retribution for all the Byrde’s criminal activities during the series’ duration. However, as teased by insiders, the series has yet to decide on the fate of the Brydes.

Why is Ozark season 4 in 2 parts?

After an extended hiatus, Netflix’s Ozark returned with a new season in January 2022. Season four marks the series finale of the crime drama series.

Therefore, instead of the usual 10-episode season, the producers of the show opted to have an extended season four in order to conclude the story properly.

Therefore, instead of two 10-episode seasons, which would have beem four and five, there will be a two-part, seven-episode season four.

While season four, part one is now available on Netflix, no word has been shared on when the fans can expect part two.

Conclusion

Ozark only has seven episodes more until the thrilling crime drama concludes its five-year run.

The first part has already served all the plot twists and suspense expected from the show due to Omar Navarro’s arrest by the FBI, with the Byrde family’s fate hanging by a thread.

However, the biggest question from the first half of season four is the intention of the flash-forward car accident scene involving the Byrdes.

While the series has suggested that they have not decided on what will happen to the characters involved, fans have already started speculating on who will die.
