Maya Wilkes, a central character played by Golden Brooks, was an aspiring author, a mother of one and a wife to her high school sweetheart, Darnell Wilkes.
The first season of the sitcom saw acclaimed actor, Flex Alexander play the role of Darnell. However, when the second season of Girlfriends began, Alexander was replaced with a new actor.
However, there was no room to speculate why Flex left, as the reason was arguably self-explanatory, as it was revealed later that year.
This is as in the same year as season two of Girlfriends, a new sitcom kicked off with its debut season.
The sitcom was called One on One and the premise was, according to IMDB, “A sportscaster must take on the responsibility of being a full-time dad when his teenage daughter moves in with him.”
The sitcom would feature Flex in its title role as Mark “Flex” Washington, father to Breanna Barnes. Moreover, Flex was also credited as a producer of the hit 2000s sitcom.

If you are a fan of Girlfriends from its original run between 2000 and 2008, one of the easiest mistakes is to think that Khalil Kain was the original Darnell Wilkes.
This is as the actor, rapper and film producer portrayed the character between season two and season eight, until its sudden cancellation was announced.
What is Flex Alexander doing now?

Why did Girlfriends end?
Girlfriends ended in 2008, after eight seasons. Season eight ended abruptly with the thirteenth episode titled Stand and Deliver.
The cancellation of the show was announced at the height of the Hollywood Writers’ Strike of 2007/8.
The CW asserted that the reason for the cancellation was due to the cost of licensing each episode during this time, as it was uncertain when the strike would end, and Girlfriends, whose significance was not acknowledged at the time, was one of the casualties.
