Behind Reality TV

Girlfriends: Why Darnell was changed from Flex Alexander to Khalil Kain

Darnell from Girlfriends was played by two different actors, initially portrayed by Flex Alexander and later by Khalil Kain from season two onwards.

With the advent of streaming platforms, many shows that were often not given the credit they deserved as culturally defining shows during their natural run, have since gotten some acknowledgement.

One such show is Girlfriends, which initially aired between 2000 and 2008. In 2020, Girlfriends found a home on Netflix, as result, new fans of the show have questions about the changes in casting.

Particularly that of Darnell Leroy Wilkes, who was first played by Flex Alexander who left after the first season and was then replaced by Khalil Kain.

It was later confirmed that Alexander left the show for other creative pursuits that advanced his career as more than just an actor.

Was Girlfriends cancelled?

Despite its favourable numbers, Girlfriends was cancelled in 2008. Watching the eighth and final season of the sitcom, it is easy to recognise that the show was not meant to end with the eighth season.

But the cancellation of the sitcom was attributed to the Writers Guild of America Strike which took place between 2007 and 2008.

Due to the unstable climate at the time, Girlfriends was one of the casualties, as the network touted the show as too expensive to make during that uncertain time.

Girlfriends: Why Darnell was changed from Flex Alexander to Khalil Kain

Following Girlfriends’ availability on Netflix in 2020, which marked the twentieth year since its first season aired on UPN, new fans of the show have questions about the changes that took place on the sitcom.

One of the first noticeable changes was the recast of the actor who played Darnell Leroy Wilkes, who was the husband of one of the title characters, Maya Wilkes. The first season of the sitcom saw prolific comedian, actor, and producer, Flex Alexander play the role.

However, without any fanfare when season two started airing, the character was newly played by actor, director, and producer, Khalil Kain. Kain went on to play the character until the show was cancelled in 2008.

Due to the fact that there was no fanfare about Alexander’s exit, it may be safe to assume that the departure was not amicable, hence, the show did not want to bring attention to the matter.

But Alexander simply left Girlfriends to pursue bigger creative opportunities. This opportunity came in the form of the now equally lauded sitcom of the early 2000s fronted by an all-Black cast, One on One.

In One on One, Flex Alexander not only got the opportunity to play the title male character of single father, Mark “Flex” Washington, but he also affirmed his other creative pursuits as he was the executive producer and went on to direct some of the episodes of the UPN sitcom.

Was One on One cancelled?

Similarly to Girlfriends, One on One’s cancellation is attributed to logistical reasons rather than the sitcom’s performance in terms of ratings.

Prior to the sixth season of the show, the series was cancelled by UPN. The cancellation was because UPN and The WB were merging to create what is now known as The CW network.

The Flex Alexander-conceptualised sitcom was one of the shows that were cancelled as the two entities were merging and figuring out the new direction that The CW wanted to take. This was despite the continued favourable ratings that the sitcom was receiving.

What is Flex Alexander doing now?

In the years since fronting One on One, Flex Alexander has taken on more supporting recurring roles than leading roles in series or films.

However, he has worked extensively through the years. Some of his notable credits in the years since One on One and Girlfriends, are Alexander’s work in series and films including Snakes on the Plane and The Hills Have Eyes ll.

However, more extensively, he has featured in cameo roles in a number of popular series in the years since. Notable features include cameos on Grey’s Anatomy, Lucifer, and most recently, he was the recurring supporting character of George on Mixed-ish.

What is Khalil Kain doing now?

Similarly to Flex Alexander, after his role on Girlfriends, Khalil Kain featured in several small supporting roles on a number of films and series.

Some of the most notable credits the actor, director, and producer has include Blue Bloods and Coming 2 America. Moreover, Kain is still an active actor with new roles in the pipeline.

In 2022, he finished shooting a television series titled The Friend Zone, while his second show in production, titled Privateers, is currently in post-production.
