In Fire and Blood, Aemond wears a sapphire eye after losing his eye during a scuffle with his cousins, though House of the Dragon has not shown the eye yet.
House of the Dragon is the prequel-sequel to the HBO Max global smash hit series, Game of Thrones.
Unlike Game of Thrones, which was based on George R.R. Martins’ A Song of Fire and Ice, House of the Dragon is based on the novel, Fire and Blood.
In light of this, there are details about House of the Dragon which readers are already familiar with that the series has not shown viewers yet.
For instance, Prince Aemond wears a sapphire eye sometimes instead of the eye-patch that series viewers have only seen him wearing after the scuffle with his cousins that left him blind in one eye.
Prince Aemond lost his right eye in Fire and Blood
On HBO Max’s House of the Dragon, we know Prince Aemond to have a blind left eye. However, this came as a surprise for fans who have already read the novel, Fire and Blood.
This is in addition to other minor details that have been tweaked between the original source material and what series viewers get to see. In the book it is written that Aemond’s right-eye was blinded instead of the left.
It is unclear whether there is significance to this, as in the book it could have been the defining moment and the turn of the character into complete ruthlessness as seen with the character in the series.
House of the Dragon: Why does Aemond have a sapphire eye?
It should be noted that in House of the Dragon, Prince Aemond’s sapphire eye has yet to be revealed on screen.
This is as most of the scenes don’t allow it just yet as most of the scenes feature the prince in formal settings, in which the book expresses that he would usually wear his eye-patch so as to not make people uncomfortable.
But the loss of his eye occurred in season one, episode seven, titled “Driftmark”. This is after Laena Velaryon’s death, who had her dragon, Vhagar, kill her after she faced complications with her pregnancy.
Aemond, who was teased and bullied by his brother and cousins because he did not have a dragon, decided to bond with the oldest and biggest dragon at the time, Vhagar, who was meant for Laena’s daughter, Baela.
Upon discovering this, in the series, Jacaerys, Lucerys, Baela, and Rheana all attacked Aemond upon his landing after he bonded with Vhagar.
Lucerys delt the tragic blow during their scuffle as he used his knife to slash Aemond across the face, which caused his blind eye and subsequently, will result in the sapphire eye in place of the missing eye.
Why is Aemond called the Kinslayer?
Season one of House of the Dragon worked to establish the relationships between the various family members of the House of Targaryen and its affiliations.
In some ways, it can be considered as the first half of the book which is a straightforward narration of the Targaryen history before the events of Dance of the Dragon, which will depict the three-year epic battle for the succession of the crown.
In this time, Aemond, who is known as an expert swordsman, earns the nickname of Aemond the Kinslayer, after killing his cousin Lucerys as a form of revenge for taking his eye along with his dragon, Arrax.
When does Aemond show his sapphire eye on House of the Dragon?
While it cannot be confirmed yet, the release of the season finale teaser for House of the Dragon seemed to tease that viewers will finally get to see how Aemond looks with his sapphire eye.
The teaser shows Aemond taking off his eye patch but never reveals his face in the quick snippet, which can only suggest that this is in fact what will happen when the episode premieres on Sunday, 23 October 2022, marking the conclusion of the first season of the series.
When does Aemond earn the nickname Kinslayer in House of the Dragon?
With the release of the trailer for the season one finale of House of the Dragon later in the week, fans have already speculated about what events from the book will feature in this upcoming finale.
One moment in particular that fans are waiting to see in the episode believed to be the beginning of the second half of the Fire and Blood, Dance of the Dragon, is Aemond killing Lucerys in the epic battle between the cousins and their dragons.
This is as after Aemond killed Lucerys, he earned the nickname of Aemond the Kinslayer and was praised by his brother, Aegon, with a feast to celebrate the death of their cousin. This only fuelled the battle and descent of the Targaryens into a full war.
