The man behind First Wives Club’s David

Mark Tallman has played First Wives Club’s David Montgomery since the show’s very first episode and has somehow made him a fan-favorite character in just three seasons.

For the past few years, Tracy Oliver and her First Wives Club remake have done a wonderful job at spotlighting Michelle Buteau’s Dr. Bree Washington, Jill Scott’s Hazel Rachelle, Ryan Michelle Bathe’s Ari Montgomery and Michelle Mitchenor’s Jayla Wright as the powerful, professional Black women that they are.

However, that does not mean that the series has neglected its supporting cast along the way. And this includes the somewhat uptight senator David Montgomery, who has had his very own rollercoaster journey throughout the show’s first three seasons.

All about David Montgomery

Look, we are one hundred percent with you if that David scene in the very first episode had you questioning our girl Ari’s decisions right off the bat.

But if Mark Tallman’s charming take on this flawed character and David’s dedication to his marriage did not win you over by First Wives Club’s second season – then we are sure that that rap battle with Gary certainly did.

And while it certainly took Tallman’s David a fair few episodes to earn his spot on the list, we would venture that his growth in the past three seasons certainly means that he has now been cemented as one of First Wives Club’s fan-favorite leading men.

First Wives Club’s leading men

Though First Wives Club certainly started out as a show about the girls, by the girls, and for the girls, there is no denying that the always-messy men that round out the cast just help to give it that extra bit of pizzazz (and eye-candy).

And since, if we are being completely honest, Ari, Bree, Hazel and Jayla have some of the most complicated romantic entanglements that we have ever seen on a non-soap opera show, the number of husbands, boyfriends and varying love-interests on the series has almost doubled since the first season.

And without giving away too much about where exactly they fit into the narrative – the First Wives Club leading man cast list can be outlined as follows:

Name Role
RonReaco Lee Gary Washington
Mark Tallman David Montgomery
Malik Yoba Derek Ellsworth
Bill Barrett Jacob Rosen
Gary Dourdan Dr. Malcolm Reynard
Terrence Terrell Wesley
Mikhail Keize Nigel
Tobias Truvillion Khalil
Affion Crockett Tyrell

All about Mark Tallman

Although Tallman displays his role as David in First Wives Club in the very top line of his Instagram bio, you may also recognize him from one of his many other notable roles.

Tallman’s resume includes everything from All My Children (in which he played Kyle in eight episodes between 2007 and 2008), to the Step Up 3D film (released in 2010) and the Lovestruck musical (which was released in 2013.)

But before he landed the role of David in First Wives Club, he was also featured in The Last O.G (2019), Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (2019), Red Dead Redemption II (2018), Madam Secretary (2018), Rise (2018), The Good Fight (2018) and many more.

Can we talk about the Gary and David bromance?

As much as First Wives Club is focused on the female friendships between all of its lead characters, the series has also managed to capture the often-missed friendship between the husbands who tag along.

In fact, both Tallman and RonReaco Lee (who plays Gary) have discussed how happy they have been to see the friendship between their characters grow on the show.

And we must admit, whether it is an impromptu rap battle, or a simple coffee date, that David and Gary certainly do seem to bring out the best in each other.

What is in the cards for David next season?

All of the First Wives Club characters have been through a lot since they first appeared on our screens in the pilot episode.

But (spoiler alert for the information to follow) with his long-distance marriage-turned-funeral, David has definitely gone through the most.

And it is probably silly to expect David’s life to get any less complicated if (hopefully) First Wives Club does return for another season.

But we hope that he will at least get a moment to catch a breath before the next life-altering challenge befalls this friend group.

Of course, even with Maxine seemingly out of the picture for now, there is always still a chance that he could strike up a new romance very soon.

It should be quite interesting to see how his new boo will fit in with Ari’s loyal friends. After all, they were willing to break and enter just to protect her in season two.
