Sorcha Cusack played the role of Mrs. McCarthy on Father Brown for almost a decade, but reportedly left the show to focus on other projects after season nine.
Father Brown has been on the air for over a decade, and it remains one of the most popular British Detective shows on television to this day.
However, the show’s cast has changed slightly over the last few years and Sorcha Cusack, who played Mrs. McCarthy, left the show before its tenth season due to scheduling conflicts.
About Father Brown
Father Brown is a beloved British detective show, which is loosely based on the Father Brown short stories by G. K. Chesterton, and has been airing since 2013.
The series follows Mark Williams in the role of the mild-mannered, but intelligent crime-solving Roman Catholic Priest, Father Brown.
He investigates and solves the crimes of the members of his parish, if and when these cases catch his interest.
Father Brown’s unique combination of intrigue, wit and small-town comfort has made the show a fan-favorite among viewers for over a decade, and it continues to attract new fans to this day.
What happened to Mrs. McCarthy on Father Brown?
Father Brown is one of the few shows in history, which has managed to stay on the air for more than 10 seasons.
In fact, even though the filming and production for Father Brown’s ninth season was delayed by more than two years because of the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the BBC has already confirmed that an 11th season is on the horizon in 2024, following the release of season 10 in January of 2023.
Unfortunately though, this long break in the show’s production did bring about some changes in the cast.
The actress, Sorcha Cusack, who played Mrs. McCarthy, the parish secretary at St Mary’s and Father Brown’s close confidant, left Father Brown just before the show’s tenth season.
Although Cusack has never officially provided an explanation for why she chose to leave Father Brown after such a long time in the supporting role, John Burton (who fans will recognize as Sergeant Goodfellow on the show), offered some insight into Father Brown’s casting changes, via his X (Twitter) page.
Burton explained via a lengthy tweet on December 13, 2022, that long-running shows like Father Brown often need to be “refreshed” on account of the busy schedules of some of the famous cast members, who might have other projects lined up.
And although Burton never mentioned Cusack or her character in this post, it is very likely that the reason Cusack chose to move on from the show after nine seasons was simply to focus on some of her other projects.
What Sorcha Cusack has been up to since she left Father Brown
Sorcha Cusack’s Mrs. McCarthy was one of only a few characters in the Father Brown series who made an appearance on the cast list from the very beginning of the show in 2013. Hence, there is no doubt that her departure will take some getting used to.
But dedicated Father Brown fans can still see more of Cusack’s impressive acting skills on some of the projects which she has been involved in since leaving the show.
This includes Cusack’s short stint on the other British Crime drama, Dalgliesh, and her role as Gwen in the 2023 musical romance film, Chuck Chuck Baby.
Other cast members who left Father Brown in season 10
Cusack was not the only beloved Father Brown cast member to bid the show farewell in its tenth season.
Other familiar faces like Jack Deam, who played Inspector Gerald “Jerry” Mallory on the show between 2016 and 2022 have also decided to leave the show to focus on other projects.
This includes Emer Kenny, who played Lady Felicia’s niece, Penelope “Bunty” Windermere, between 2017 and 2020.
Cast members who have joined Father Brown since season 10
Although Mrs. McCarthy’s departure from Father Brown may have felt like the end of an era for many fans who have been dutifully tuning in to watch the priest and his antics for the last couple of years, Burton’s message also conveys the reminder that as one era ends, another begins.
Father Brown has also welcomed a few new cast members since Cusack’s departure, including Claudie Blakley’s Mrs. Devine and Ruby-May Martinwood as Brenda from The Wayward Girls.
Of course, longtime Father Brown fans can also still expect to see some old, familiar faces as they tune in to watch newer seasons of the show, including Chief Inspector Sullivan (played by Tom Chambers) and of course, Lady Felicia (who is portrayed by Nancy Carroll) and Flambeau (played by John Light).
