Behind Reality TV

Megan – First Wives Club’s own dose of Gen Z

Megan - First Wives Club’s own dose of Gen Z

Megan is First Wives Club’s best Gen Z approximation, and we absolutely love her for it.

In the world of Tracy Oliver’s First Wives Club remake, most of the screen time is dedicated to our favorite leading ladies, Bree, Hazel, Ari and Jayla (portrayed by the talented Michelle Buteau, Jill Scott, Ryan Michelle Bathe and Michelle Mitchenor, respectively).

And while watching these ladies balance their careers, their relationships and their families is more than enough to keep audiences entertained for hours on end – there is something to be said for the First Wives Club characters who do not quite follow in their mothers’ footsteps.

Why we love Megan Montgomery

Megan explained her polyamorous relationship to her parents in the first season (after having a somewhat scandalous video go viral – talk about main character energy).

Between this and radically opposing her parents’ political and career views in the second (go off, sis), and even having to explain how sexual orientation can change over time in a mostly-awkward conversation with her father (we stan) – it seems like Megan Montgomery, who has been played by Bailey Tippen since season two, is First Wives Club’s very own Gen Z-icon.

And, while Megan has only ever appeared in a few First Wives Club episodes in the last couple of years, it is always nearly impossible to predict what will be coming out of her mouth next.

And watching the, uh… more mature, characters try to keep up with her has truly become one of the most entertaining parts of the series – between all of the heists, affairs, weddings, and funerals, of course – no cap! (as the kids would say).

Megan’s brief appearances in First Wives Club

Given all of the priceless moments that Megan’s arcs have given us so far, it is a shame that we have really only ever seen her on screen a handful of times throughout First Wives Club’s first three seasons. This includes:

First Wives Club Season Episode Title
Season 1 Episode 4 “Storytelling” (in this episode, younger Megan was portrayed by Rachel Hilson)
Season 2 Episode 9 “Spend My Life With You”
Season 3 Episode 3 “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted”
Episode 10 “Dancing in the Streets”

And while the show did explain that Megan is in boarding school in its first episode, we think that it is high time that the First Wives Club producers speed up her graduation.

Why Megan should be a bigger part of the plot

Okay, so perhaps this entire article has just turned into one big petition to get the First Wives Club producers to feature Megan more prominently in the next season, but can you blame us?

Megan’s character is one of those key elements that makes the First Wives Club remake feel like it has been transported out of 1996 and into the 21st century, not to mention the fact that Baily Tippen is an incredible young actor.

Though she is young, she has already landed many notable roles in shows like Sleepy Hollow, Underground, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and more recently, Tales and BMF.

The blueprint

Even though it may not seem like the young and alternative Megan is the ideal fit for her mother’s older and more traditional friend group, First Wives Club has pulled off this trope quite successfully with Versace already.

Although Versace may not be as Gen Z-ified as Megan is, they are definitely more than a few similarities between their characters.

And since Megan and Versace are both very driven, well-educated ladies, this even brings up the possibility of a new-generation friend group that the series could explore in future seasons.

First Wives Club actually has the perfect opportunity to spotlight one more character

If you have not finished all three seasons of First Wives Club yet, be warned – there are some major season three spoilers ahead.

But if you have watched season three, then you will already know that we had to say goodbye to Ari (Megan’s mother) at the beginning of the season.

And while many of us are still struggling to come to terms with this loss, this does give the First Wives Club producers the perfect opportunity to transform Megan into one of the show’s major characters.

After all, they have already kind of set the wheels in motion with Hazel and Bree fighting about who would take over the responsibility of being Megan’s stand-in mother.

Moreover, it would be so easy for the show to transition her into a more regular, recurring role at the beginning of a new season. That is, if the series does get renewed for another season.
