Behind Reality TV

Did David and Ari low-key have the best relationship on First Wives Club?

Did David and Ari low-key have the best relationship on First Wives Club?

Ari and David certainly had their problems, but upon reconsiderations, they may just have had one of the most successful marriages on the show.

As lucky as the ladies at the center of BET+’s hit show, First Wives Club were to find their super-best-friends so early in their lives, Bree, Ari and Hazel have not been nearly as lucky in the romance department.

In defense of Ari and David’s marriage

However, while we certainly need to acknowledge that what we saw of Ari and David’s relationship in the first few episodes of the first season was rough, they are certainly far from the worst when compared to the other dysfunctional couples in the show.

And considering all of the show’s cheating, lying, scamming and even kidnapping, it is really difficult not to feel like Ari and David, who made it work whilst they both stayed focused on their original careers, and even when they lived about 3,000 miles apart – may have had something really special in their marriage, even if they did have a few bumps to get over.

The other First Wives Club marriages

First Wives Club has now been airing for a total of three seasons, and while we all love our leading ladies, we do have to admit that their lives are messy.

In fact, the only reason why we feel so confident saying that Ari and David may just have been on the right path all along is because Hazel’s and Bree’s marriages are so much worse.

And if you are still not convinced, here is a little table recapping some of their lowest-lows marriage-wise:

Couple Lowest lows
Bree and Gary
  • Gary cheated on Bree and got into another relationship while they were separated
  • Bree cheated on Gary, and then gave up a promotion out of fear that it would ruin her marriage
Hazel and Derek
  • Derek cheated on Hazel (repeatedly)
  • Derek locked her out of the penthouse out of spite
  • The ladies had to resort to kidnapping (and drugging) Derek just to get their messy divorce back on track

The almost-cheating debacle

There is a common rule in television that if a character dies, but you never saw the body – i they are not really dead. Well, we think it is high time that we institute the same rule for cheating.

So, even though we still have a few questions about what exactly happened between Wesley and Ari that night at Beast’s party, we choose (just like Ari) to believe what Wesley said about them never actually cheating.

And despite Wesley and Vanessa’s best efforts, this means that David and Ari are the only First Wives Club couple who has not had a cheating narrative.

Why do we keep discounting Ari’s instincts?

It is  admittedly nearly impossible to ignore all of the glaring issues in Ari and David’s relationship (and the fact that they spent most of the second season in different cities).

However, one thing that you cannot ignore is the fact that Ari is one very, very smart woman. And, whether we agree or not, she chose David and their relationship over and over again.

This regrettably includes the fact that she almost gave up her career to support him in his career, all of the times that she almost hooked up with Wesley, and more.

But the reality is that with her new lawyer job, and their daughter Megan out of the house and off to boarding school, Ari could easily have given up on her marriage as time went on, but she chose to stick it out.

Although we may not always agree with Ari’s choice (or understand it), knowing Ari, she definitely had her own well thought-out reasons for her choices. And like all good girlfriends, we need to respect that.

Do we think David and Maxine are getting together?

Nothing can get between two people re-building their marriage quite like a surprise aneurysm. And unfortunately, that is exactly the way that the cookie has crumbled for David and Ari’s marriage.

And now that we have all had some time to get over the shock of Ari’s death, it is time to accept that David will probably start moving on, too.

While it is true that David and Maxine decided at the end of season three that they were simply better off as political allies rather than romantic partners, Maxine sure seems like the type of women that knows how to get what she wants, and we think that it will be just a matter of time before David admits that he has fallen head over heels for her (if the series returns for a fourth season, of course).
